A Starbucks manager who called the police on two black men for not buying anything no longer works at the store, the corporation confirmed.
The Starbucks manager was removed from a Philadelphia location after another full day of protests at the coffee house.
A Starbucks representative told the NY Daily News the unidentified manager “no longer works at that store,” and “there is an internal review pending.”
The incident began last Thursday when the manager called 911 to report two men were loitering inside the store and refused to leave.
The men asked to use the bathroom, but were denied access because they did not buy anything and they didn’t leave when asked to.
Police Commissioner Richard Ross said his officers “reluctantly” arrested the two men.
“I can tell you that that police officer did not want to have to make an arrest in that incident,” he told WPVI. “The whole thing, we just wish it didn’t happen.”
The commissioner walked back earlier statements that the police didn’t do anything wrong.
“Here’s the thing, unless someone comes forward with something more than I know now, it doesn’t appear that they did anything wrong at all,” the commissioner said. “In fact, they were really trying not to make an arrest in this case.”
A small group of very vocal protesters demonstrated outside the store on Friday and throughout the weekend.
On Monday, a larger group carried signs that read “TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE” and “COFFEE is BLACK”.
The entire incident in the coffee house was captured on video and uploaded to social media last week.

cus Starbucks ain’t nothing to write home about. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/2c326b3d4391a92d69dd47fb810462737d38336e261961d802ae8fd3fb517b5e.gif
I’ve been there a couple times to hold meetings…only bought coffee once as I’m not into bitter overpriced drinks ?
“I can tell you that that police officer did not want to have to make an arrest in that incident,” he told WPVI. “The whole thing, we just wish it didn’t happen.”
_______________
They didn’t have to. Too late for shoulda, woulda, couldas.
I don’t like how Starbucks is handling this at all. It seems like they are trying to protect the manager more than they should.
She was moved to another store.
Said she didn’t know they would be arrested when she CALLED THE COPS … smh
Big Up to those brothers, they kept their cool and composure.
I’ve waited in Starbucks, with a DnD cup of hot cocoa and no one said booo
Chile this CEO will have your azz if you do shyt like this… that was easy to fire this one… . it goes completely against company policies … The more you know… Starbucks is a very good company and will pay school tuition too.. .
In other Starbucks news today, a Glendale (CA) location refused a non-paying black man the code to the restroom but gave it to a non-paying white man.
And when the CEO meets with the black brothers he needs to have a nice check in his hand for their suffering and mental anguish.
That check should be able to have them live comfortably for the rest of their lives.
WAT, sound a hole lot like “i didn’t wanna shoot him” “The whole thing, we just wish it didn’t happen.” — just wish it didn’t blow up like it did is all!!!
It’s starting to look like the 1950’s all over again. Separate and not equal. I’m glad I don’t drink that over-priced garbage. We as black people really need to put our money where our mouth is as a whole. Once this incident blow over another will rise. Change will not come unless we stop supporting businesses like this.
Sweet lordt I hate ignorance … Be back on another post … I’m taking care …. ?
knowing these types it’s a hand shake and gift certificate. that meeting is to possibly intercept a lawsuit that they should surely file!
nooo don’t gooo jenie! do you like starabucks or dunkin?
First if all, did the manager resign or was he/she terminated. I saw on another site that she was removed which could mean alot of different things. I think the handling of this situation should have been handled much better. The manager should have been fired the day it happened. Point Blank. Period. I live in the state where a couple of months ago two black college students were asked to leave Applebees after being accused by the manager and employees for not paying for their food the day before. Ya’ll remember that? There so much pressure and attention on that shitty restaurant that the manager and the two employees were fired within a day and the site was closed down and is STILL closed down.
If he dont have a check in his hand, I’d thank him for his apology and go find me a lawyer right after. He’d have to pay me for all this unnecessary ass bullshyt.
for his sake they better just to make this awl go away cuz in the current climate it could only turn into mess for a while and imagine a “sit in” at starbucks across the country. i could see it now
If there ain’t no justice then there ain’t no peace

If there ain’t no justice then there ain’t no peace
**Edit** The people crucifying me for acknowledging Starbucks is trying to right a wrong are the ones who are part of the problem. How can anyone be upset at the CEO and Starbucks for admitting this was wrong, firing the manager and wanting to make peace with the 2 black men who better be compensated for racial profiling and discrimination. The CEO and Starbucks clearly want to make this right. Can you at least give them the chance.
Thank goodness because I didn’t want to have to boycott Starbucks. I love their Chai Tea latte and blueberry muffin.
That’s how you handle stuff like this. Shut the whole store down. Get rid of everybody.
Peace out
You are apart of the problem. Smh, you could have kept this stupid comment to yourself.
Wow…really?? You selling out for a chai latte and a blueberry muffin???
People are apart of the whole problem! Selling out for a damn Blueberry muffin and I bet her ass is fat..you don’t need it
really girl .. ? https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/8b210f8465b6e6202bbcd177f0eccef6b843ba82e4b3f779d57396e83f6a7fba.jpg
“ass fat, yea i know” sorree i’m on my nicki trip right now
woo if hubby don’t lub him a carmel macchiato. personally i ain’t a coffee person so it ain’t my fight
not now sis, I’m on a roll with this dummy up top
woah they’re STILL closed, are there any plans to reopen, i could’ve sworn down that that was months ago.
I thought it was illegal to deny the public use of bathrooms. Hell I don’t even ask, I just go and use it. These businesses are too busy tryna profile people, instead of worrying about the register ringing and employee theft
Where does it say he was “terminated?”
Girl u can get that anywhere lol especially the muffin
They should just file anyway. That puts them in a stronger position. I wouldnt even meet with the CEO, at least not yet. Starbucks doesnt want any more bad publicity from this. They’d be willing to settle quickly and pay them off to make this go away.
First time I’m hearing the manager was terminated only Sandy lol; our news is reporting the manager was removed from that location.
The protestors were inside the location today chanting “ A whole lot of racism, a whole lot of crap, Starbucks Coffee is anti-black”…. In an effort to ensure that particular location didn’t make any money today, and the police didn’t stop them…
http://www.fox29.com/news/national-news/protesters-gather-at-philly-starbucks-call-for-change-following-arrests
Exactly.
That’s what Black people do. Never stick together like other races.
Truly sad.
I always go to starbucks even have a gold memeber status but I am done. I will look for independent shops which I loved when I was in ATL and NYC but Maryland just…geez
I see signs regularly that say restrooms are for the customers of a business… so that implies there are no public restroom laws.
absolutely, the countrywide humiliation vis-à-vis the video and the racial overtones lends itself to what could be a strong discrimination case
K. NEW POST, a Tristan “Spread It Wise & Lay it Low” Thompson update
I believe this was an isolated incident; I’m confused what actually happened to the employee though because Philly.com is reporting “The manager who called 911 has left the store pending an investigation by Starbucks, a spokeswoman for the company said.” Under any other circumstances that person would’ve been FIRED.
The way people act after drinking that coffee has me questioning its content in the 1st place…after their 1st grande cup they will spend their last dime and cause a accident for a sip of that motor oil they call coffee
That’s a public restroom. The sign is more than likely there to deter any vagrants, from attempting to bathe/shoot up/have sex in them. The implication is there and I’m sure a purchase for restroom use isn’t fair exchange. It’s more likely than not, a requirement for any reputable business to operate.
No! No! I’m not selling out of nothing!! I’m the biggest supporter of black people being treated right. But if the manager was fired, the black men are fairly compensated for what was done to them and the CEO is making sure the correct measures are put in place to make sure this never happens at another Starbucks, then why continue to boycott? Although I normally get something from them daily, haven’t done so since this incident. But if the CEO wants to make it right don’t you think he deserves the chance?
lol
The Koreans have good coffee
I agree. The CEO looks like he’s trying to do the right thing here, so I’m willing to give him the benefit on the doubt on this.
LOL.. you said not now.
Stop it! Save this for people who do absolutely nothing for the black community. I’m one of the biggest supporters of black businesses and will boycott any establishment that doesn’t do right by black people. But if Starbucks and the CEO are doing everything humanly possible to rectify a wrong then I will give them the chance. The manager was fired and hopefully that was only the beginning.
So how many lukewarm beversges did they not sell today?
The police commissioner is so full of it I cant stand his azz…all he does is ride the fence and he never ever stands for black men and he’s one too…I really thought this wouldn’t happen here but I guess its everywhere…now the true tea is whats the name of the supervisor??? They still haven’t released the name when usually they do if something like this happens??? Inquiring Philly minds want to know…
sis I stopped reading after you said Stop it. Unfortunately I can’t tell if your comment was in agreement with mine. If it isn’t I did the right thing by not reading..
That’s a shame that the manager was fired for two dudes who were basically loitering in the first place.
Nyggahz don’t like to follow the rules. White liberals got Black Democrats feeling entitled.They got you feeling everything is a protest,when it’s not.
I’m pretty sure she was relocated to another store…Fellow blacks, stay clear of ALL starbucks because you won’t know which one she relocated to and the next time she get a black customer, she might have flashbacks and give your coffee some extra mouth “cream”.
I will not be spending my money at Starbucks anymore and I’m ready to boycott everyone of them until I have to make my own damn coffee at home. The more upset I get at these corporations, the more of my money I get to keep and invest. Their hate will eventually work out in our favor.
Agree ?
The manager was not fired! She was moved to a different location
Ms. Sandra you forgot to say they were there to meet a friend not just there to use the bathroom. I noticed black media:bloggers are not stating that.
The bathrooms are locked with the code for them printed on the customer receipt is what the article said on CNN.

I have sat down in Starbucks and waited for folks in peace many times. People wait for the whole party to arrive before ordering, not uncommon, it’s courteous in fact. Those men should have been left alone!
Good luck finding a new job racist bih.

A white supremacist masquerading behind a blank panther avatar and socially conscience name…this what you allow on your blog Sandra?
….. i drink Dunkn so ?????
Ion drink that nasty ax stuff no way ?
This person just want people to argue with him or her. He or she does this all the time just to get hits.
riiightttt how dare they think they can wait in the establishment for the rest of their group to come before ordering? !!! the nerve !!! ?
Racist wenches, why don’t they ID her? Did Black Twitter find out who the hag is?
A bunch of white people and a trump mask protesting more tom foolery
It’s about following the rules out in public at certain establishments…
The two men were waiting for a real estate developer Andrew Yaffe, who happens to be white, for a business meeting. If you’re going to tell the story, TELL IT RIGHT rose!
Please don’t pay this Elevated Soul any attention. He or she comes on here to get people to argue with him or her.
I’m sorry but that disturbed me. You are right though.
I’m not trying to get my Black Card revoked. I’m just not understanding why boycotting the whole company is beneficial? The main reason ppl go there is for the social component. I stay in there all day just to network w/ small biz owners. (I only drink + stan for Dunkin coffee…) however, this is an isolated incident & I’ve actually always appreciated the internal core values system of the co. ?
Sandra didn’t post the whole story. The two black men were there for a meeting with a real estate developer who eventually showed up. One of them may have asked to use the restroom but they were there waiting for a business meeting.
??
think about the Montgomery bus boycott you stand with your people and hit the whole corporation in the pocket they know you mean business when they lose $$$$ ,nowadays blacks don’t stand up for s…that is why they treat our money like garbage and eventually it will happen to you.
What rule did they break? What Starbucks rule did they break?
Nothing most of these people are young so they have no clue what they are talking about.
Lol…I am trying to figure out what article she/he read where she could possibly place the blame on the two young men. People don’t even realize their own implicit bias. It’s like…they read And only comprehend what is already ingrained in their consciousness and then State it as fact. Or maybe she is just going off the comments or Sandra Rose article or memes or social media post. I have no idea what she read to come to the conclusion that they weren’t following the rules. Unfortunately, I don’t think it has anything to do with being young.
The rule of the second you are asked to leave a certain establishment and you say no (loiteringor trespassing). Seats and bathrooms are for paying customers so if you are not paying you can’t sit and you can’t use the facilities. This has happened to me quite a few times in my life. Sometimes I just leave or sometimes I buy something. I have a no loitering/trespassing rule at my job (which I’ve had to utilize once). If people don’t wanna leave I am to call the police and state I have an issue with people refusing to leave the property and the police arrive and remove them. Btw, I also live in Philly.
I concur! I think my reaction is more of the angle from the franchised location; knowing management is a reflection of the corporation. But I certainly agree w/ you…
I saw it last night on FB, but can’t find it. Someone posted her business card and the one from the CEO.
I have to agree with you. There’s more to this. How long were they waiting? Why did they refuse to buy anything? Why did they refuse to leave? I will continue to go to Starbucks. It’s a business and they have to make a profit. I’ve never seen anyone sit up in there and not buy anything?? Then asked to use the bathroom.
So, BLM organized a protest for men who were kicked out of Starbucks. That’s commendable. Now what has to happen for them to organize a protest against the various Service Agencies that permitted two WHITE LESBIANS to starve, beat and murdsr six black children over a 10 year period? Oh, that’s right, BLM condones EVERYTHiNG done by the gay/trans community. So not even a peep of protest.
Carry on, then.
They don’t want to offend the LGBT community. YET…the world came together for those kids who were nearly starved to death by their parents. But can’t say nothing about six black kids killed by white lesbians….tortured, starved, drugged and murdered! But we can protest for some negroos sitting up at a coffee shop…not buying anything and refusing to leave.
You’re not black, liar. Even the most ignorant coon understands the topic your fake obtuse persona is stupid.
The problem is that a lot of people including the commenters have sat in Starbucks and waited on someone before we purchased. Not only that…when we go to a Starbucks we see people who are sitting there doing whatever and have been there all day and they may or may not have coffee. If Starbucks is going to enforce that rule. Do it across the board. If they only enforce that rule sometimes, there is a problem. I actually don’t have a problem with them being arrested after they were asked to leave. But I want to know why THEY were asked to leave. I am not boycotting. I don’t go enough to try to boycott. It’s just a good example if not having the privilege to wait in Starbucks.
Since when can you roll into an establishment and not buy anything while sitting at a table? Any shop or restaurant, will ask you to leave. Only black folk would stay…and then try to use the locked bathroom. They couldn’t buy a coffee, tea, a cookie? Then refuse to leave when asked to do so. They were rightfully arrested. They were loitering and a business can ask you to leave…JUST LEAVE! You have to pick your battles and this was a stupid one. I will go out of my way to buy Starbucks drinks this week to support the company. I don’t support ignorant blacks who think rules don’t apply to them. Nothing but a bunch of black ghetto phuckery.
SHUT UP!!! Let someone else have an opinion dumbazz!
They should have left. Now they have an arrest record.
Smh Starbucks lost me with this one. I’ll never spend another red cent in that over priced mf.
Uhm! That’s at a restaurant not a coffee shop. You order a drink …even at a restaurant.
Since when can you roll into an establishment and not buy anything while sitting at a table?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This will cause a problem…. I understand they they were waiting on a friend but they should have bought something — would have saved a whole lot of drama….
As someone with a $150 a month Starbucks habit, you can and people do all the time. Hell, I’ve had informal work meeting at the Starbucks in my building and didn’t buy anything. People go there to use the internet on their own devices. White and Asian people do it every damn day. So do black people, but not as much because in the back of our minds we think someone will ask us to buy something.
In Toronto, at least one of the Starbucks washrooms has a needle bin, because people ask to use the washroom to shoot up. I KID YOU NOT!
This woman didn’t want black folks in her store, that’s all. Even if they bought something, I suspect the ending would have been the same.
Furthermore, the black men didn’t appear to be typical Starbucks’ customers. They looked a bit hood. They weren’t spending money and refused to leave. Yeah, they should have been arrested. Most young black men are loud, aggressive, rude, uncultured, and potentially violent. Generally, I’m uncomfortable around more than one black man. There may be a good reason why these broke fools were asked to leave. A mature, intelligent man would have left or bought a drink. I read the charges were dropped but the hoodlums have lawyers. For what? Deadbeats trying to get some money. Just so darn lazy!
It’s a rule and I agree it should be enforced across the board however, some people are better at enforcing rules than others and some people don’t care. My job for example has a no guest parking rule because the people who park are paying for their spot. I’m 1 of the only ones (maybe two other people) who enforce it does this that make us a racist tho? No. We’re doing our job that’s it.
Why create a problem? Buy a drink? Leave? Or get arrested? They chose arrest. SMDH!
A man was shot and killed and a boy took a bullet to the groin at a Chicago Starbucks. An alderman claims people are conducting drug deals in the coffeehouse. After this, I guess it’s anything goes at Starbucks.
What’s a shame is that I went to the black websites and the people are saying it is the black guys fault. I go to white websites and they have done the same thing these two are accused of doing and didn’t get arrested..my people are backwards as all get out, not unless (wish I hope) these are just trolls…
If you enforce your rule across the board then NO. But if Someone has watched you not enforce on someone and then you enforce it on two black guys… Yes. There were customers in the store who said they have used the bathroom before without purchases and have sat there without purchasing. In that store. In this instance, the rule was not being enforced across the board. There was bias AND the bias led to an arrest. The manager had to be held accountable. If you are equally enforcing your rule at your job, you are good. But Admiting bias is something people have a hard time being honest about because it’s so natural to make assumptions and they can always blame the person receiving the bias.
Agreed. I think it has hit home with a lot of white people becauee they KNOW they sit in Starbucks all the time without being anything
I’m mad at the police (as usual) for taking the men into custody, holding them for 9 hours and not even charging them with anything.
Black people why don’t you use coffeeshops as a last resort? like if you’re on the road otherwise, brew your own. I buy a big azz can of coffee for about 10 bucks at Costco, lasts for months vs. Starbucks making bank $5 for 25 cents worth of product/labor costs. I buy coffee maybe 3-6 times a YEAR. Emergancy only and now, F Starbucks.
What???
I am equally enforcing it but other people aren’t and that’s the problem. Maybe the manager wasn’t there on those days to know that. The manager was there when said incident occurred and acted. I’m not being biased at all here they did nothing wrong until they refused to leave an establishment after being asked to leave. It’s sucks but that’s a crime, a very small one but still a crime.
She treating black males like dogs can you imagine how she’s been treating sistas?
I never understood the appeal of Starbucks, on a sidenote. This is crazy though. I know the rule of ‘must buy something,’ but most business aren’t sticklers about it. I can’t imagine enforcing this when all the two people are doing is sitting and conversing. IDK, I wouldn’t have asked them to leave.
At this point Fam…. we MUST DIVEST!!! Now that BLACK supervisor learned the hardway… when you do the MOST you’ll be the sacrificial lamb. She should be ashamed of herself for calling the police on those men. They did NOTHING wrong and now you’re a collaborator and Starbucks has shifted the blame from their POLICIES to YOU. Oh well, she’s out of work and Starbucks is CANCELLED!
oh…..that’s different. I’m being silly, but the point is you know they pick and choose what struggle to get behind.
According to the neighborhood’s alderman, Starbucks was aware that drug dealers were doing business in this store and should have done more to keep them out.
https://www.google.com/amp/www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-chicago-shootings-violence-20171102-story,amp.html
nah, so much heat the charges definitely will be dropped.
Right….Now honestly, I don’t do coffee but I don’t feel people should stop going there, just because two Black males,didn’t want to follow the rules for the establishment they were in.
Many Black people with the mindset of the poster,feel the rules don’t apply to them because they feel entitled.
Thanks, thought that just happened it was 6 months ago…
It was a SISTA who did that???
CHILD BYE!
Sure was
I know that based on the plethora of “queer affirming” language on their wesite, along with their desire to free themselves from “hetero” thinking, and “cis gender privilege”, they clearly place white lesbians above the lives of black children. If they ever criticize anything or anyone gay/trans, they know the millions will stop flowing into their accounts.
From the BLM website:
“We foster a queer?affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).”
“We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.”
No, they don’t. No official charges were filed.
Starbucks definitely isnt a “you must purchase something” location. Folks post up there ALL DAY EVERYDAY. Thats why even the white folks were like wtf… Cause Starbucks is the hipster chill spot.
This country is a nightmare this is a clear cut and dry case of fear of the black man. Kind of seems like the spending power of African Americans has to be used to fight back in a capitalistic system spending trumps voting it seems .People should stay politically engaged but also vote with their dollars .
That is truly not the starbucks business model as odd as it may seem to folks that don’t do the coffeehouse. Not purchasing anything is a normal occurence for Starbucks. Also they were waiting on someone. U usually wait for my other party to arrive before ordering. I dont wanna be half done with my beverage or food before they arrive.
So he was transferred to a different location, not terminated?
I just you didn’t read the whole story just going by what Sandra reported. They were waiting for a real estate developer for a meeting who happened to be white. People should really read the real sources instead of going by a gossip rag. SMH!
Better yet! How many white people roll up in this Starbucks waiting for a friend or a business associates and were never asked to leave?????
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/aae65b1e773de4e82569b697c7c748150d4ed77438ad3dc262005196e58b4cac.png
The mere fact that ALL thr white ppl in the vid were confused at the arrests, let’s you know there was no level of discomfort had. The black men are professionals…
Would you like a link to my SM or website? Don’t call me a liar. I read the post, made a statement. There was no dissection created; just my quick reaction.
It’s the internet you’re not real unless I see you face to face. Maybe I went hard but you showed no empathy for what the brothas went through.
I read somewhere she is BLACK but forgot to copy the link…
Shoulda reported it.
I really wish we would put our efforts and power behind meaningful movements. It was a black woman who called….nobody wins here. If she was following company policy why was she terminated?
Yes, you must read other news sources. This is entertainment here nothing more it’s like doing a research paper by using Wikipedia……
Respectfully, my perspective was solely on the corporate boycott. My father is a black man, and any life that comes from this womb (like my mama) will always have the legacy of being “Black in America.” I live, love, breathe & would take my last breath for the continual healthy narrative + uplift of Black Men. ?
Exactly Starbucks or Panera Bread aren’t stickers about sitting & chilling.
Foh!
Baby where are you from seriously? ?
Word on he street is that it was a black woman who called the cops
It seems the manager was a black woman? If she was terminated, then that’s a black person (woman) out of a job. Damn!
Starbucks is one of the best companies to work for, according to a survey. They have tuition reimbursement – manager may have been a student trying to get the benefits. They pay good wages; at least in Chicago they pay above the minimum wage.
So I hope she was transferred and not terminated.
I still maintain that it was company policy. Those baristas have to go through training and orientation. I betcha somewhere in the policy book, it states “no trespassing” or “customers only can use the bathroom.”
I live in Chicago, Chicagowise, and I remember that incident. The alderman sent a letter to Starbucks about the activity and how the managers weren’t monitoring the activity. I betcha that Starbucks started a policy about trespassing after that incident!
The alderman sent a letter to Starbucks and I betcha Starbucks started a policy about people “hanging” out.
Nah, they should have bought a donut.
Interesting. Well. That blows the racism case. She knew they were up to no good and called the man.
She’s employed at another store. She was right to call the police on those broke shiftless negroes.
She was transferred.
I read the article posted here and other sources. They did not look like professional men. If they were serious about the meeting, they would have acted like intelligent men and bought some water, tea…something. They would have thought about the bigger picture…buying real estate. Duh!
They were detained for nine hours and caused a hoopla over nothing since the woman that called the police is black.
Apparently, a black woman called the police. She’s been transferred not fired. As the commissioner said the thugs refused to leave and had to be arrested.
PERIOD!
We have been conditioned for generations to racially profile our own people, to fear our black men, to hate our black women and to belittle our own children.
Very true… you don’t want to be half done with your food before the late party arrives… I don’t think that they should have been arrested. That is definitely an over-the-top response… I don’t do coffee houses so wasn’t aware that you could spend time without a purchase….
I’m from NYC and I don’t do Starbucks…
Sometimes I go to Starbucks to grade papers or do research when I just wanna get out of my house. I never buy anything. Ever. Plenty of people walk in Starbucks to chill, do homework or whatever without purchasing anything. This ho is tripping.
I don’t drink coffee, I’ve never been to a Starbucks.
They need to identify the manager. He/she must be white.
The one man that can really make a difference in this situation is Magic Johnson. He is the ONLY person that has a franchise with Starbucks. No one else at all!! He needs to be speaking up about this shit! ??
Starbucks is one company that does not franchise out their name. Atleast at one point it was like that And Magic has been the only one to do so.
Sorry, but I feel sorry for Holly the Starbucks manager. She was following store policy and got canned:
The female Starbucks manager, named only as Holly, who called 911 on two black men no longer works for the coffee chain
She claims that loitering has been an ongoing issue in the store and she was once chased after ordering a customer to leave
Holly also blamed what she said was a Philadelphia Center City store policy that forbade loitering in the store
A representative for Starbucks confirmed on Monday that the employee had left
Yeh. She said she had issues before at that store.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5623889/Starbucks-manager-Holly-called-cops-black-customers-claims-loitering-ongoing-problem.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490
Number 1. The daily mail is bout as bad as the Enquirer when it comes to news. Number 2. If that’s the case 50% of the ppl who go to Starbucks should be having the police called on them and arrested for loitering.
Did you read the part where she said it was “store” policy against loitering? THAT store, not YOUR store.
A few months ago, I was told by a Barista at the Santa Monica blvd. & La Brea store (W. Hollywood) that I could not sit there and charge my phone if I had not purchased anything. I went ahead and bought a bag of popcorn. They seem to have this policy at locations with a lot of homeless people nearby.
I have dropped in to use the bathroom on numerous occasions, studied/read, set up shop during tax season and NEVER have I had any issue. Majority of the time not ordering chit! Like I have seen many do as well. At countless sitbucks around the county. Or any coffee house for that matter. I thought things were bad when Obama was elected, but now ish is out of hand!
Sidebar: I am beginning to see why my Great Uncle, whom was 97 when he passed last year, said that he liked the term Colored as opposed to Black. We debated this topic for years. His point of view coupled with the South African writers of real life accounts, and other historical books that expose slavery – chattel slavery, make me think that this terminology might be more fitting. When my Uncle was coming up, people of “color” stuck together and were more communal. Now we’re out here Black (no matter how proud I am!!!) and dolo – unbound.
Can we talk about the Black child who was arrested for body slamming a mumbla for calling him a nigger? So tired of these bold racist thinking trump is going to be in office forever.
I don’t want to protest…I want more people of COLOR to end this crap and get more involved in politics! I’m too passionate and sensitive myself.
Really Auntie…my whole soliloquy just moderated and deleted???
I did nothing wrong officer…
Did you see the video? Even the white ppl were trying to figure out what the 2 guys did wrong. Even the customer who filmed the video was on Twitter tweeting about the incident stated there were other ppl who were in there who hadn’t ordered anything. And she went to that Starbucks all the time and ppl would be there for hrs w/o ordering. But now all of a sudden the store “policy” goes into effect.?
SMR: A Starbucks representative told the NY Daily News the unidentified manager “no longer works at that store,”
That doesn’t mean she was fired. More than likely she was transferred to another Starbucks after a ‘vacation’.
move along to the starbucks two blocks over that he was most likely was transferred to.
It’s unfortunate that it happened but I don’t blame Starbucks. Once your asked to buy something, you buy something or leave. The gig is up. They berated the manager, told her she didn’t make enough to talk to them. Made her feel powerless in a store she is paid to manage. If they had so much money why couldn’t they order a water to keep the peace. They had how many opportunities to just buy something!!! Dumb. Next time go to the library…
There’s another story in CA
https://www.aol.com/article/news/2018/04/16/video-another-racist-starbucks-incident-involving-black-man-barred-from-bathroom/23412567/
It is Starbuck’s fault because they don’t seem to have a consistent policy! You can’t have some people sit all day, use the bathroom and not purchase anything AND then have other people asked to leave for trying to do the same thing. The managers need training and they need consistency at all stores!
People can be biased against their own.
Black conservatives hate other blacks with a white hot passion.
They were meeting someone, duh!!
The person they were meeting showed up as they were being arrested.
They didn’t know when the person would arrive, idiot.
Furthermore it’s rude to order something before your guests arrives.
I am sure they thought that the person would be there any moment but how were they supposed to know it would take so long.
FYI lot’s of white racists post on black websites.
So, we endorsing calling the police over hurt feelings? It’s called customer service. Just cause they were rude doesn’t mean you go pick up the phone and report a crime……how do you even have the unmitigated gall to type that nonsense.
They were called to be removed but they were orchestrating a sit in.
What makes them broke? Perhaps they didn’t want coffee, perhaps it was just a business meeting. And if I was arrested for doing nothing but sitting in a PUBLIC setting (which is allowed by my constitutional right) and my constitutional right was violated then yes I would sue as well. Call it the cost of doing bad business. They had no voice to protest the arrest but they can fight the discrimination as they were directly singled out and likely because of their skin color as their were other patrons that were not “buying anything” as well.
Auntie Ruckus or Sandra or whoever you think you are, you a pitiful excuse for a black woman……
Is it racist to ask someone to patronize a business? I’m not with this one.
Thank u.
Removed from that location doesn’t +fired.
Why was an arrest needed?,the men refused to leave after being asked too. Literally for being black. Trumps America.
This went out like the bat signal last night in my city LOL…She’s from Ohio (Dayton Area)…deleted all of her social media profiles last night…
Patronize? Do you understand how customer service works? Other patrons in the restaurant were not harassed. Yet these 2 men were. That in itself is racist……she singled them out specifically and decided that of everyone else in the store, they posed an imminent threat rather to the look of the store or the overall business practice. We have to get away from this banter that black people need to fit a “mold” in order to be accepted in mainstream America and if they are not then they deserve to be harassed or treated differently.
If they decided not to move or in fact refused to leave due to what they deem unfair treatment, that was there right as American citizens. What makes this even more of a disturbance is the man they were meeting showed up as they were being arrested and they were still taken into custody.
The man showing up gave clear reasoning as to why they were there and they should have been released immediately. But they were in fact taken to jail and locked up for 9 hours. For what? Because they didn’t follow the request of some over zealous woman who felt that they were out of place?
I prefer the coffee bean.
I thought the Manager was black though…SMDH…there is always one.
That’s exactly what it means. When I read the headline yesterday I said to my mom”I take this to mean she was moved to another store. Pay attention to the wording.” She replied”She was moved to another store. I watched them talk about it on The View.”
The police wouldn’t have been there to arrest them if the stupid manager wouldn’t have called them.The DA is the one who chose not to press charges after they sat in jail for 9 hours. I place all my anger on the stupid manager who singled them out out of everyone in there and caused everyone else to get involved. She started this BS.
You sound like a fuking idiot.
You don’t HAVE TO BUY SHYT when going into
Starbucks. I have legit seen folks not doing SHYT except sitting there. I’ve seen folks chatting. I’ve seen homeless come in out of the cold – not bothering anyone – but just chilling. Why in the fuk would the manager be scoping out these two men when white folks ADMITTEDLY have done the same thing? FOH
Ok, just so I’m on the same page, there were actually two recent incidents of racism with Starbucks, right?
One was a man denied the bathroom code because he didn’t buy something yet a white man walked out of said bathroom and told the black guy that he didn’t buy anything yet but was given the bathroom code.
The other incident was TWO black men sitting waiting on a friend and hadn’t ordered anything and the manager called the police on them because???????????????
Both cases are truly pathetic on Starbucks part.
“the black men didn’t appear to be typical Starbucks’ customers.” What does a “typical Starbucks” look like? White female wearing Uggs holding an Iphone? So no one else ever goes to Starbucks? “They looked a bit hood”. Why? Because they were Black? Because they were wearing sweats? Did their White business partner look”hood” with his vest on like he was going on a camping trip? You remind me of the waitresses that worked with one of my relatives when all of them except my relative refused to wait on a man because he appeared to be homeless and unkempt. My relative waited on him while everyone else scattered. That “homeless man” left her a tip that paid her college education, because he wasn’t homeless at all. Just a human living his life observing how vile other humans can be to each other.
“Furthermore it’s rude to order something before your guests arrives.” Thank You! I thought the exact same thing. If we’re meeting there, why on earth would I order before the person I’m meeting arrives?
What exactly does that have to do with Philly?
Isn’t it sad. I break this narrative every chance I get.
They’re real estate investors. What do you do again?
Starbucks isn’t enforcing that rule because they don’t have that rule. All these people keep wanting to compare Apples&Oranges and not accept the issue for what it is. People talking about Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds and their job when the occurrence happened at Starbucks.Unless people have been asked to leave Starbucks because they weren’t buying anything, their comparison is mute. Starbucks isn’t a restaurant. It’s a coffee shop known for people going there specifically to use the Wifi. Business who have the rule that the Restrooms are for customers only have signs posted saying that. If it’s a rule, Starbucks isn’t aware of it-“The Starbucks official acknowledged that the incident is at odds with a common practice at Starbucks. The stores are “community” hubs, the official said, where people often drop in to use the WiFi or chat with friends without necessarily buying anything.” People are grasping at straws and making excuses for what happened while Starbucks is apologizing and saying it shouldn’t have happened.
Starbuck NEVER said this lady was terminated, they said she was moved to another location. That means she was moved to a location with less black people.
Were you there? Funny, because the people that were actually there said those men did absolutely nothing.
And this mindset is the SAME mindset of those cops who DO shoot and kill black males; they are SCARED, INTIMIDATED, and based off of skin color alone, they assume they are bad people, automatically. Hence, the many, many murders of black men in the streets. If they feel unsafe inside of an establishment, then they definitely feel the same way outside of one.
I agree with this. I know in some larger cities they are more strict about having people just loiter. But in general if you buy SOMETHING (which is why they are there) they will not bother you for being there. If you want to just hang out, go to the park or Library or a mall.
your = you’re
Customer Service is for customers.
I’m not that vested in this argument. Just because you’re present doesn’t make you a customer. White folks are not my standard. Where I live, you have to drive to the Starbucks, I wouldn’t drive, park and sit in an establishment and not buy anything. I think it’s a courtesy, not because white folks do it or don’t do it.
I agree that there needs to be a policy. It sounds like Starbucks has turned into a Greyhound station.
Tell that to millions around the country! Tell that to the executives at Starbucks. Their goals & mission statement is community involvement and I believes that means a community atmosphere at the stores.
Exactly….Many Blacks especially those with Democratic mindsets always create problems for themselves. After they create problems for themselves, then they begin to whine and complain while never holding themselves accountable.
Bottom line is that when they were told to leave because they were lotering,they should have just left but no they started telling the police,how little money they make….They’re now playing the victim but in truth they aren’t victims of anything.
Don’t magic own a bunch of Starbucks it’s not all white money.
Chick was white tho
No
? regardless if he sold it he should still be speaking up about it. He did business with them. Now go play.
Yes, she was white even though they attempt to put out that she’s black to soften the experience. It’s another form of racial profiling, using the black person image, and the woman is a PR move that’s race bait.
I said I never saw a black woman in the original footage.
That said, I stated that because we have been taught to do so and we need to be aware of our own operant conditioning. People were already looking for a black woman to blame. All you have to do is read comments and see how the black woman is used and blamed for every down fall of the black man. This scenario was no different. We are still used to take down our own by our own and others.
I don’t patronize businesses that allow fools to loiter inside or outside their establishments. There’s a so-called gay youth center in Lakeview that has singlehandedly increased the crime rate in that community. Someone needs to find a way to kick them out of the neighborhood.
On the flip side, I don’t spend money where black people aren’t treated with the same respect as other customers. I know of a north side store that tried to force black customers to leave their bags at the door. Now, they barely get any customers at all!
It appears that different Starbucks have different policies about trespassing.
It’s still stupid. Period
You clearly did not watch the video. The other patrons at the Starbucks tried to tell the police the two black men did nothing wrong and an arrest was uncalled for.
You’re right, but as a business owner you do have to draw a line It should be a consistent line, but a line should be drawn. If you have a bunch of loiterers in ANY business it pushes away a good percentage of the paying customers either due to perception of being too busy or because so many are just hanging around. It should never be a racial thing, but I still hold to what I said
You’re right, as a business owner you dictate the policies. However, Starbucks was not founded on that principle of “loitering”, but rather community gathering. If you’re a true Starbucks customer, you don’t think of it that way. Others who have never been in one or just occasionally may see it differently.
To me, the story is about consistency and policy! You can’t do things different at each location and expect the same result. Imagine if McDonalds made their fries one way at some locations and different at others? No consistency, right? I’m not a coffee drinker, but an HR professional and policy and consistency SHOULD rule/dictate your business practices. We all have different opinions – have a great day!
Seems like if that was the case, we would’ve known her name, seen her pic, her family pic, her address, and her dog/cat by now.
No assumptions are made. History and actions speak for themselves. One cannot reference history when it suits them, but deny the obvious trends, patterns, and non-lying facts that exist when it comes to crime. A mindset of discrimination would assume to say its all about fear and intimidation. You are not realizing your discriminative mind is showing through your comment. Re-read and interpret. Black men do not feel unsafe anywhere. This a load of crap and you know it. It is using a victim mentality, while under the guise of the assailant and attacking groups of people who do not join in on this clown routine. I am intelligent and very educated,I could not even pretend to let this pass by my BS radar.
Can you make sense of your comment? As of now, it does not make any. They were arrested for refusing to leave with an attitude of entitlement. Not many other groups, races, people, etc behave in this manner. This is cultural at its best.
You are not fully aware of how law works. Police can not act on random spectators. These people would be dubbed “witnesses” when a court case arises. Its a TIME AND A PLACE, which is why this happened to begin with. An entitled attitude of thinking one is above the laws of society. They did not have to leave if they would have expressed themselves. I watched the video and this whole thing seems malice.
The “man” who showed up was never confirmed to have been the man they were meeting from anything I read. This, until proven otherwise, could fall under “mob mentality” although not the same color, it was not about color. If notice how society tends to work, in a dispute inside any retail store, restaurant, etc… the Patrons always seem to side with the patron whom starts trouble. This story seems no different.
Well the problem I am seeing is there was a policy followed. The inconsistency is in whom actually wants it to follow-through the whole way. It seems like it is in the best interest of the business, but yet we now have a situation where two men think they can determine what is best for the business. Until they invest a single ownership dollar, they do not have say and this loitering policy was to ensure the high level of appeal of the business stays that way.
They must have forgotten society still cares about some of its structures, businesses, etc. We do not have the same “hood” mentality these two ignorant men had.
No it doesn’t lol. You are obviously not referring to the right “community”. You are referring to “BLACK COMMUNITY” they mean the ACTUAL, accepted definition of “Community” which means not just black. It amazes me how some people show their misunderstanding or ignorance in some cases, and do not realize it.
I agree with your logic. The inconsistency is partly on Starbucks period. They want to say “community” when people like myself who frequent their locations could tell you that’s not what they mean. They tend to bring in more of a higher paying customer base. They are getting caught up in the “dirty” tactics of business advertising. They use the word “community” to appeal more, when they are NOT. Dunkin Donuts is more of a “community” atmosphere (elderly hanging out, other people hanging out, etc)..People at a starbucks are typically on laptops and not approachable in nature.
They are making themselves NOT sound like their base clients are the more privelaged.
She should sue. She was the most wronged in the scenario. She FOLLOWED policy. I am waiting for the smoke to clear, and people to remember retail rules/policies and more importantly, Liability. She followed the policy that they turned their backs on to fire her. THEN CALLED HER RACIST. Clearly, defamation of character lawsuit already, guaranteed, no question.
Fortunately your one the the few who actually believes the ones arrested deserved to be. Even the company’s CEO the one who enforces the company rules said it was racial discrimination. But thank god for “free thinkers” like you who weren’t there to make a determination of what it was and wasn’t because it better fits your narrative.
Where would the the world be without people like you……..Oh yeah…..less racist and far less ignorant. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/a6da785870f991131cf3ad8e6e73d04a0b05e760f0f664bb9c698f1baa4b3a62.gif
When you enter a business, do not buy anything and loiter, you are trespassing. These men were not “singled out” for any other reason than the simple fact that they refused to buy something.
God, you’re stupid. Can’t you even write an intelligent, logical comment using proper grammer?
The CEO did not use the legal term “racial discrimination.” He simply stated that Starbucks needs to work on its policies, which is purposely vague, P.R. language so as to limit financial fallout from the incident.
