Sanaa Lathan attended the special screening of Netflix’s original movie Nappily Ever After at the Harmony Gold Theatre in Los Angeles, California on Thursday. Sanaa celebrated her 47th birthday at the screening.
The movie is about a woman (Sanaa) who is tired of waiting for her longtime boyfriend to propose, so she breaks up with him. She is forced to deal with her feelings of resentment and jealousy when her ex promptly proposes to another woman.
In the process of discovering herself, she shaves her hair and feels liberated for the first time in her adult life!
Netflix answered the call for a movie that empowers Black women to discard their weaves and wigs and embrace their natural hair. Gabrielle and Sanaa embraced their natural crowns for the movie.
Actress Gabrielle Union, left, joined Team Natural about a year ago. But Sanaa shaved her natural hair for the movie role. Gabby and Sanaa starred together in the coming of age movie Love & Basketball 20 years ago.
Actors Grace Gibson, left, and her mom Lynn Whitfied attended the screening. Like her mother, Grace is a veteran actress. She starred in Black Nativity (2013), All Eyez on Me (2017) and Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.
Nappily Ever After premieres today, Sept. 21, on Netflix.
