Soundcloud singer Jacquees had the industry buzzing this week when he crowned himself the king of R&B. Most grownups can’t name a song he ever recorded.
It’s not like Jacquees is the Bobby Brown or Chris Brown of this generation. Many who have heard him sing are not impressed.
Hip hop mogul Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs isn’t impressed either. He schooled Jacquees on the finer points of bragging: have some talent and hits to back it up.
Combs is a hip and R&B purist who is best known for changing the course of hip hop music with his extensive catalogue of hits by Bad Boy Records artists.
So when he speaks about music, people listen.
Combs, 49, says “that word ‘king’ is too loosely thrown around.” He reminded the youngster that a couple of hits on Soundcloud or iTunes “ain’t gonna do it.”
Combs says it takes a catalogue of hit songs before you can seriously crown yourself a king of anything.
Below is Combs’ list of R&B requirements to be a future king of R&B.
