An 11-year-old Texas boy was shot dead in a drive-by shooting at a home in Channelview, Texas early Sunday.
Kamren Jones was one of seven children being raised by a single father named Kenyatta Jones. The Jones family recently moved into the house that was previously occupied by people involved in criminal activity.
Gunmen opened fire around 4:20 a.m. Sunday. The house and a car in the driveway were riddled with bullets.
Kamren was the only one injured even though three other children were asleep in the same bedroom. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales believes the home’s previous occupants were the intended targets of the gunmen.
“This is a child. And these are cowards that shoot into a home,” said Gonzalez. “They could have killed and injured a lot more people. We’re going to do all we can to bring justice to this 11-year-old that lost his life this morning so tragically.”
Police say the previous occupants were involved in drug activity.
“There was a lot of activity and possible criminal activity that had been going on in the home prior to that,” Gonzalez told ABC 13.
Kenyatta Jones created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Kamren’s funeral expenses. He also updated his Facebook page with pictures of his smiling son Sunday night.
This is the GoFundMe message about Kamren:
“If anyone knows Kenyatta Jones and his story, you would know that he is a God-fearing man who has taken care of his seven kids with Love and Value. His fourth born child Kamren was taken away too soon at the age of 11 from a drive by shooting of mistaken identity. Any support will help. Thanks.”
