A South Carolina transgender is the 12th to be killed in the U.S. in 2019. Authorities say Denali Berries Stuckey, 29, was found dead on the shoulder of North Charleston Road on Saturday.
An autopsy determined Stuckey was shot to death. Police believe Stuckey was killed elsewhere and the body was thrown from a car.
Hundreds gathered to remember Stuckey outside a local LGBT+ center known as Equality Hub.
Friends and family were outraged that local news used Stuckey’s “dead name”, a term that refers to a transgender’s birth name.
“If you didn’t like the fact that she was trans, she would give you a piece of her mind,” family friend Ron’Rico Judon told ABC News.
Stuckey is the 3rd known male-to-female transgender to be killed in South Carolina since 2018, according to Chase Glenn, the executive director of the Alliance For Full Acceptance in North Charleston.
According to the Human Rights Commission, all 12 murdered transgenders were Black. Most if not all were sex workers.
Police have no suspects or leads in the case.
