About 130 Bahamian evacuees are stranded on a devastated island after they were removed from a ferry to Florida because they didn’t have U.S. travel visas.
The evacuees were left homeless after Hurricane Dorian made landfall in Abaco Island, Bahamas last Sunday. Most of the homes on the island were destroyed by Dorian’s category 5 winds as high as 185mph.
400,000 are left without power, food or clean water to drink.
The evacuees were removed from the ferry at a harbor in Freeport after they were told they could board as long as they have a passport and no criminal record.
Before the ferry left, an announcement was made telling everyone without U.S. visas to disembark.
Investigative reporter Brian Entin for WSVN-TV was there covering the evacuation.
“Big problems on the ferry from Freeport to Florida — announcement just made that any Bahamian without a visa must now get off. This is not normal. Nornally [sic] Bahamians can travel to USA with passport and a printout of their police record. This is a mess,” Entin tweeted.
News footage from inside the ferry shows the chaos as hoards of people – including children and babies – exited the ferry, carrying all of their worldly possessions in bags.
Lawmakers pleaded with President Trump to waive the rules so the evacuees can board a ferry to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
The Bahamas is not a U.S. territory like the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Cuba enjoys great privilege under US Immigration Law. All they have to do is get here, and they can stay. They go to the front of the line in EVERYTHING. They get authorization to work within a few months, permanent residency (Green Cards) with a couple of years, and US Citizenship in about 5 years. It’s been that way for decades, which is why they have such a strong presence in South Florida, and are politically very influential. They also tend to vote Republican, which is why you hear almost nothing from them about Wet Foot/Dry Foot and the open borders for Cubans.

The most commercial and dense are Freeport Grand Bahamas & Nassau and there are some little islands. They have fishing businesses. The problem is getting to the people through all the ruble and getting the people on boats and airplanes to be transported to the other islands. Most of the people in the Bahamas have family all through the islands and in Miami. Once the disaster was OVER, then the planes and boats could get through, but they had to wait for the hurricane to pass over…..GEEZ!

We are a US territory so we had FEMA agents, electrical workers from different states, contracted and may others come to aid in the recovery process. Patience and knowledge is a great value. The value is in the land and lots of young people home were the ones selling. They inherited property that was paid for and sold it for little to nothing.
I inherited my Mom’s house a few months before the hurricanes. We lost the roof during the second storm and FEMA offered me a $25,000 loan to repair the roof but I had to give them the deed. I refused and was able to get a personal loan through my credit union in Florida to cover all the repairs. Even the government is in on the scam. You default and they own a property they can now sell.

Being from the Bahamas and one who still has family and friends missing there are many people that I know that have no family or friends on the other islands. I know for a fact many who have family members living in the US and only had family in the Northern Bahamas who either perished, are trying to leave themselves or are still missing. Not everyone knows someone in Nassau.

Praying for the missing people, hopefully they can be found if still alive. There are children still looking for their family hopefully they can be reunited. My best friend called right before the storm and said she felt she was going to die as water was already seeping in but thank God her and her family made it out. She and other family members survived with just the clothes on their back. They need all the prayers and support right now.

At a time like this it is the humane thing to do. I did not lose my roof in Maria- therefore I was not as badly affected as most. I live on the island of Dominica. Many Dominicans relocated to St. Lucia, Antigua, Trinidad etc. They went to school, stayed with friends and family and in some cases complete strangers. Once things started to regularise back here, people started coming back home. I think there is a misconception here that every islander wants to come to America and live. I did that and without correct papers it is very hard life…. some people just need a break to get their mind right, take care of themselves and their kids and come back home to paradise.

Listen, after Maria, we had two windows blown out due to debris flying from a neighbours home. We had $4000 in damage. The insurance company said we had to pay $5000 first…
And I totally understand that, I am so sorry for what you went through and I pray GOD that you were made whole. However I have been on both sides of the coin, I was homeless for 2 years sleeping in my car because I was young and dumb made some mistakes and instead of moving back my parents home in Atlanta, I decided to remain in Indianapolis, and sleep in my car for 2 years, no one knew I was homeless the entire time and I was managing a call center . I have also been misplaced by a hurricane and had to suffer for 3 months again sleeping in my car. What I have noticed is that we America have a lot of homeless and still misplaced people in our own country that cannot get a hand up out of their situation, because we are extending our resources to other countries… I am not saying we should not financially help, or send supplies not at all that Is the right thing to do, but moving people in to our house and having them live off of the tax payers for Lord how long, that an issue makes, especially when we have our own homeless problems.

We Bahamians LO?E our family of 700 islands and cays. Thank you sincerely to everyone who is reaching out to assist those who have been displaced in Abaco island and Grand Bahama island. Bahamians are allowed to travel from Nassau Airport and Freeport Airport to the United States with a police record certificate OR a U.S. B2 multiple entry Visa. The U.S. visa would only be required if they intend to board a cruise departing from a U.S. cruise port (e.g. a Carnival Cruise out of Port Everglades Fort Lauderdale) or if they are taking a flight from a foreign country flying into the United States (e.g. fly from Jamaica to Miami). I can speak for myself in that I like visits to the United States but would never try to overstay their illegally. I respect any country’s laws worldwide when I travel to them. Therefore, I expect the same from any nationality of people who wish to visit my country The Bahamas. Bahamians have always had an excellent friendly warm respectful relationship with the United States that’s one of the reasons why we have U.S. preclearance lounges in Nassau Airport and Freeport Airport. Bahamians who are currently due to hurricane Dorian staying with their family or friends in the United States know it is temporary and true Bahamians will respect U.S. laws and leave that country by the 30days or whatever deadline President Trump has granted them and will return to The Bahamas to try and rebuild their homes and lives with the generous assistance of all of us and kind donations from others worldwide. May God bless all of you and the United States for temporary assistance to our citizens for humanitarian reasons. ???????
