President Donald Trump sparked outrage when he compared lynching to the Democrats push to impeach him. Trump made the inflammatory remark in an early morning tweet on Tuesday.
“So some day, if a Democrat becomes President and the Republicans win the House, even by a tiny margin, they can impeach the President, without due process or fairness or any legal rights. All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here – a lynching. But we will WIN!”
The reaction was swift as outraged Democrats accused Trump of racializing the impeachment process.
“You think this impeachment is a LYNCHING? What the hell is wrong with you?” tweeted Congressman Bobby L. Rush, a Democrat Representative from Illinois.
Rush added: “Do you know how many people who look like me have been lynched, since the inception of this country, by people who look like you. Delete this tweet.”
Lynching is defined as a mob of people who kill someone for an alleged offense without a trial.
According to The Tuskegee Institute, 3,446 Black Americans were lynched between 1882 and 1968.
South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham agreed with Trump. Graham told reporters the Democrats are taking the law into their own hands.
“I think lynching is being seen as somebody taking the law in their own hands, and out to get somebody for no good reason,” he said on Tuesday. “This is a lynching in every issue.”
The Democrats are anxious to impeach Trump before the 2020 elections. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declined to hold a floor vote to officially authorize an impeachment inquiry.
Political pundits say Pelosi doesn’t believe she has the votes to impeach Trump.
