Billy Porter turned heads when he attended the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards wearing a long white feather train attached to his white tuxedo jacket. The train was so long it required an attendant to carry it for Porter.
The flamboyant 50-year-old virgo looked stunning and owned the red carpet. Porter is known for his extravagant one-off outfits. At the 2019 Met Gala he wore a gold gilded bodysuit and he was carried in on a golden litter by six muscular shirtless men.
At the 2019 Oscars Porter wore a fabulous Christian Siriano gown with a matching tuxedo jacket.
TIME magazine asked the former R&B singer for the inspiration behind his clothes.
“When you’re an actor, the clothes are part of the character, the clothes help create what the character becomes, so when I bring that into this space I can do anything because I know what the character is,” he said.
“You must wear the clothes, the clothes must not wear you,” Porter added. “That’s a theater thing – you have to become the character or else you ain’t no good!”
Porter’s stylist, Sam Ratelle, said the concept of fashion as theater is something he shares with Porter.
“Billy and I both come from the theater community, so this is costume design for me on the highest scale,” said Ratelle who is pictured with Porter at the Golden Globes.
“The red carpet is pretty much a stage, it’s theater. It’s just a different stage and a different way of expressing yourself. Billy allowing me to direct him is just such a gift because he’s so open and willing to do so many things, so for me, that’s really a joy.”
