Harris County police arrested a Houston man who murdered his fiancée, days after he proposed to her on New Year’s Eve.

Kendrick Akins, 39, turned himself in on Saturday morning, hours after shooting his fiancée Dominic Jefferson after midnight on Saturday.

Police say Jefferson, 33, was killed during an argument with Akins in the parking lot of an apartment complex. A neighbor heard a loud argument in the parking lot followed by gunshots.

Akins initially fled the scene, but he returned and shot at a neighbor who was trying to help Jefferson. The shots missed the man, and Akins fled the scene again before police arrived.

Akins and Jefferson dated for only three months before he proposed to her. She took to Facebook to show off the engagement ring Akins gave her. The couple recorded the proposal and posted the video on Facebook.com.

“Nobody deserves to die like that,” Jefferson’s sister, Charmone Onyeije, told ABC News affiliate KHOU-TV in Houston.

“I’m not going to let her die in vain, but I am going to celebrate her life as we know it.”

“We need answers. Why did it come to this? How did it come to this? She has kids,” said Jefferson’s sister.
