A Texas salon owner was sentenced to seven days in jail for defying a stay-at-home order and refusing to shut down her hair salon.
Shelly Luther, owner of Salon A la Mode in Dallas, was found in contempt of court on Tuesday and slapped with a $7,000 fine plus seven days in jail.
A GoFundMe account set up to help pay Luther’s legal bills raised over $344,000.
Judge Eric V. Moye called Luther “selfish” for continuing to operate her hair salon in violation of the governor’s stay-at-home order.
Luther told the judge she refused to close her salon because she had to feed her kids.
Luther, 46, received a case-and-desist ordering her to close her salon, but she publicly ripped up the restraining order.
Moye chastised Luther in open court, telling her she acted selfishly and called on her to apologize to elected officials whose orders she violated.
In response, Luther said: “I have to disagree with you, sir, when you say that I’m selfish, because feeding my kids is not selfish. I have here stylists that are going hungry because they’d rather feed their kids. So, sir, if you think the law’s more important than kids getting fed, then please go ahead with your decision. But I am not going to shut the salon.”
