Chicago rapper FBG Duck was shot multiple times by unknown assailants while shopping with friends in the famed Gold Coast area of downtown on Tuesday.
Chicago police spokesperson Tom Ahern said three people were shot on Oak Street around 4:37 p.m. Tuesday.
The 26-year-old rapper and his friends had just exited a store when a black Taurus and a silver Chrysler 300 pulled up. Four shooters got out of the two vehicles and opened fire on the group.
Surveillance video from a nearby convenience store captured the sound of a barrage of gunfire. At least 50 shots were fired at the victims in broad daylight, police say.
A bystander captured cellphone video of FBG Duck, real name Carlton Weekly, writhing on the ground as he struggled to take his final breaths before being loaded into an ambulance.
He was struck in the chest, neck and groin and was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
A 36 year-old man and a 26 year-old woman are listed in critical condition at the hospital, said Deputy Police Chief Daniel O’Shea.
Chicago activist Ja’Mal Green told reporters a crowd was forming in front of the hospital. He said the shooting was not random and gang violence was not the norm in the affluent area.
“We don’t expect this type of activity in the neighborhood. Our officers were on the scene very quickly and rendered first aid,” O’Shea told reporters.
“This area is well policed and this was something that was specifically targeted for these individuals,” he said.
“To see this happen in the middle of the day is very disturbing,” he added.
FBG Duck was one of Chicago’s most popular drill rappers. He was a member of the rap collective “Fly Boys Gang,” abbreviated FBG.
Most FBG members are affiliated with the Tooka Gang, a faction of the notorious Gangster Disciples street gang.
FBG Duck was best known for his 2018 independent hit “Slide,” which racked up 53 million views on YouTube.
He trended on Twitter in June 2018 after he extended an olive branch to disgraced rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine, telling him that he’d be good in the Chi if he came through, according to DJ Vlad.
But his benevolence didn’t last long. The rapper blasted 6ix9ine as a “clown” for taking his social media antics too far, according to Vlad.
The two rappers got into a heated argument and exchanged threats on social media.
After Duck was shot in the shoulder in June 2018, Chicago rapper Lil Reese expressed skepticism that he could protect anyone, much less himself in his own city.
“N—-s can’t tell you good somewhere they ain’t even good at,” Reese tweeted.
Some say Duck’s murder was in retaliation for dissing deceased Chicago gang members on his last song, titled “Dead B*tches,” which dropped three weeks ago.
