Taraji P. Henson confirmed rumors that she and her fiancé Kelvin Hayden have gone their separate ways.

The Empire star broke the news during an appearance on The Breakfast Club on Monday, Oct. 19.

The 50-year-old Virgo explained that she and the former NFL player tried to fix their problems with therapy sessions, but she said they were “not on the same page”.

“It didn’t work out,” Taraji said. “I tried. I said, ‘Let’s do the therapy thing’, but if you’re both not on the same page with that, then you feel like you’re taking it on yourself and that’s not a fair position for anybody to play in a relationship.”

She added, “My happiness is not his responsibility and his is not mine. We have to first learn how to make ourselves happy, to make each other happy. So when one person is taking on the weight of the entire relationship, it’s never going to work… You have to still stand up for yourself and be there for yourself, but it’s hard to do if the other person isn’t doing that either.”

Taraji said she learned in therapy that men are not emotional creatures. They shut down when women nag them.

“I just found out, in our therapy sessions, that men have fewer words than women. I didn’t know that. They run out of words. Because women are emotional, we want to talk through everything,” she told Playboy magazine.

“Of course we have more words; we’re the communicators,” said Taraji. “Kelvin, he thinks he’s a comedian. Anytime we’re in a disagreement or I’m like, ‘We need to talk about this’, he’ll look at me and say, ‘Baby, I done ran out of words’.”

But Taraji hasn’t given up on love: “I’m dedicated to the black man, y’all.”

The actress and Kelvin, 37, became engaged in 2018, but they grew apart during the forced coronavirus lockdowns that have laid waste to many Hollywood marriages.

Taraji confessed she was considering holding her wedding in her garden after the coronavirus pandemic threw her plans into chaos.

The actress’ nuptials were initially set for April 4, but she and Kelvin were forced to pushed the date back to June due to bad weather – and then they canceled again due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

“It’s a mess. It’s a mess, so it might be in the backyard,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s probably going to be a backyard wedding. It would break my mother’s heart, (after) all these years, she had been wanting to see me get married and it’s got to be virtually?”
