Lil Nas X dropped a controversial music video for his song titled “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”

Like most of Nas X’s tracks, “Montero” is forgettable, but people will be talking about the music video for months.

Ahead of the music video release, Lil Nas X wrote:

“bro i wrote this song myself, co-directed the video, and had to step way out of my comfort zone for this moment to take place tonight! i hope you guys love it! F*CKK I CANT WAIT!!!”

For many viewers the music video was disturbing and unsettling. Many described the video as “demonic” and many prayed for Lil Nas X’s soul.

Some fans compared a few of the scenes to singer FKA Twig‘s music video for her 2019 song “Cellophane.”

One Twitter fan wrote: “Lil Nas X being unapologetically BLACK & GAY, giving queer kids someone to look up to AND pissing of homophobes in the process…”

On a positive note, Nas X’s biological father sent him a text praising his effort: “Very creative video. I got through it. Congratulations. Live life on your terms. Very PROUD of you.”

In an open letter on Instagram to his 14-year-old self, Nas X wrote:

“I wrote a song with our name in it. It’s about a guy I met last summer. i know we promised to never come out publicly, i know we promised to never be ‘that’ type of gay person, i know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist.”
