A rapper who was booked to perform at an NBA All-Star Game event this weekend in Atlanta was killed in a drive-by shooting along I-85, police say.
Houston’s Chucky Trill, best known for his rap single “Keisha,” was shot in the head while driving on I-85 near Jimmy Carter Blvd around 3 a.m. Friday.
Police responding to a report of shots fired found the gunshot victim in a stopped car alongside I-85.
Trill, real name Corey Detiege, 33, was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Passengers in Trill’s vehicle were not injured. They could not describe the suspect or the suspect’s vehicle, police tell 11Alive.
The aspiring rapper was scheduled to perform at one of the many NBA All-Star weekend events in Atlanta, his manager with Boneafide Entertainment told 11Alive.
Thousands of people have descended on Atlanta to take part in the NBA All-Star weekend festivities.
The NBA All-Star Game at State Farm Arena is closed to the public due to Covid, but that hasn’t deterred visitors who ignored Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’s pleas to stay home.
“This pandemic has been going on for a year now. People are tired of staying in the house,” NBA fan Kevin Hines told Channel 2’s Michael Seiden.
Hines, who is visiting from New Jersey, said he is excited to attend this weekend’s parties. “It’s all on the internet. Parties everywhere. Celebrities. All the celebrities are down here.”
Police agencies and Fulton County’s top prosecutor have issued stern warnings to out-of-town visitors, according to the AJC.
“You decide to come here and commit crimes, we will give you a free ride and assist with accommodations at the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Jail at 901 Rice Street,” the South Fulton Police Department posted on social media. “Don’t come here to fight, take other people’s things, or drive under the influence.”
Fani Willis, Fulton County’s district attorney, wrote on Facebook: “If you come to Atlanta for All-Star Weekend and commit an act of violence, please plan to stay. 901 Rice Street awaits you.”
Atlanta Police Department officers will work 12-hour shifts throughout the weekend, according to Deputy Chief Michael O’Connor.
Officers will set up road blocks near NBA All-Star events and will be on the lookout for drunk drivers, street racers and anyone hosting illegal house parties.
