Drake‘s son Adonis threw a fit during his father’s acceptance speech as the prestigious Artist of the Decade at Billboard Music Awards on Sunday.
What should have been a momentous occasion to mark Drake’s achievement was turned into a meme frenzy on Black Twitter as the toddler disrupted his speech.
Drake brought his 3-year-son onstage and handed the boy his achievement award: “You wanna hold it?”
The 3-year-old wore a red plaid shirt, black pants white Air Jordan sneakers and his hair braided in neat cornrows.
“The truth is, I’m really bad at taking compliments,” the 34-year-old rapper said in his acceptance remarks as Adonis stood quietly beside him.
“I’m really self-conscious about my music, and even if I do a good job I always wonder how I coulda done it better. I rarely celebrate anything, and um, just for anyone watching this that’s wondering how this happened, you know that’s really the answer. It’s being so unsure how you’re getting done that you just kinda keep going in the hopes of figuring out the formula. Feeling so lucky and blessed that the fear of losing it keeps you up at night…”
After thanking his friends, collaborators and fans, he picked up Adonis, and the boy broke down in tears.
The toddler is typical of privileged children whose fathers spend more money on them than time spent with them.
The news of Adonis’ birth first broke when rapper Pu$ha T released a diss track — prompting Drake to confirm the rumor on his album Scorpion.
- “I wasn’t hiding my kid from the world / I was hiding the world from my kid,” he rapped on a track titled “Emotionless.” He continued, “From empty souls who just wake up and look to debate / Until you’re starin’ at your seed, you could never relate.”
Meanwhile, The Weeknd was the big winner of the night, hauling home a total of 10 trophies.
The singer picked up seven awards before the live portion of the show even began. He won in the categories Top Male Artist, Top R&B Artist, and Top R&B Album for After Hours. He also added three more during the live telecast – including Top Artist.
Late rapper Pop Smoke, who was killed in February, 2020, won five awards, earning Top New Artist, Top Rap Artist, and Top Rap Album for his posthumously-released debut, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon.
