Music icon Patti LaBelle showed support for Lil Nas X after he was harshly criticized for kissing one of his male dancers during the 2021 BET Awards.
The openly ghey rapper sparked controversy for the provocative kiss following his performance of “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” last month.
Critics, including Benzino, called out the one-hit rapper for his same-sex kiss.
However, Patti LaBelle insists Nas X should ignore his critics and continue to live his best life as an out-and-proud star.
Appearing on SiriusXM satellite radio show Urban View, she said:
“I am really understanding now that people understand people have to live their lives the way they need to live. Sometimes it’s not bad to be yourself. It’s always good to be yourself and let the chips fall, but don’t be afraid and stay in the closet for the rest of your life.
“Lil Nas X came out, he kissed the man on the BET Awards, and it was what he wanted to do. Does that make him a bad person? No, he did himself. I say keep on doing you…”
The “Lady Marmalade” pop legend went on to accuse critics of ignoring Lil Nas X’s musical talent, and she expressed her support for the “Old Town Road” country-trap rapper.
“Don’t blow out someone’s candle so yours can light brighter,” she chastised his haters.
“Don’t dim anybody, just give the stage and the audience what you have. There’s room for everybody, too. Some people are intimidated by certain people and there is no need to be. Just do you, and don’t step on anybody’s toes, just do you and God will bless you.”
Only three formal complaints were filed with officials at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), according to TMZ.
