A Chicago man who was found not guilty by reason of insanity in hammer attacks on two women in 2014 was arrested Wednesday in the fatal stabbing of a bank teller.
The suspect walked into a Chase Bank in the River North neighborhood and stabbed bank teller Jessica Vilaythong, 24, as she spoke with customers.
Witnesses say the man entered the building and spoke briefly with Vilaythong before stabbing her in the neck with “a pretty big knife” on Wednesday.
After the stabbing, the man ran outside and screamed at pedestrians while waving the bloody knife.
Police apprehended the suspect near the bank hours later.
Vilaythong was pronounced dead at a local hospital on Thursday, Dailymail.com reports.
The Chase Bank branch in River North remained closed after the incident.
Chicago police declined to identify the suspect and told NBC5 the investigation is ongoing.
The suspect was previously arrested in 2014 and charged with attacking two 55-year-old women with a hammer as they walked on the lakefront path near Navy Pier.
Both women survived their injuries. However, the suspect was found not guilty by reason of insanity and transferred to a mental health center in 2017.
