Gold’s Gym owner Rainer Schaller and his family are among the passengers who died in a plane crash in Costa Rica on Saturday. He was 53.
Costa Rican authorities said Schaller, his girlfriend Christiane Schikorsky, their three children, and a pilot were on board the 9-seat Avanti plane known for its distinctive profile.
The German tycoon and his family were flying from Mexico to Limon, a tourist coastal town, when their private plane disappeared from radar off the coast of Costa Rica.
Authorities recovered wreckage and two bodies from the ocean 17 miles from Limon airport. Luggage was also recovered from the water. The two bodies have not been identified.
“We have recovered some pieces of the plane that were washed in by the tide, and two bodies,” said Public Security Minister Jorge Torres via AFP.
Schaller is the CEO of a corporation that operates 21 global gym chains including Gold’s Gym, McFit and John Reed lifestyle brands.
