Scooby Doo character Velma is a lesbian in the new animated film “Trick or Treat Scooby Doo!”
In “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” Velma has a crush on a bilingual costume designer named Coco Diablo.
Velma (voiced by Kate Micucci) is in awe of Diablo’s personal style, her “Brilliant mind!” and her love of animals.
Velma is seen blushing at the sight of Coco and her glasses fog over.

Velma’s character has always been heterosexual. She dated character Shaggy in comic books, the many “Scooby Doo” TV series, and “Scooby Doo” movies.
Director James Gunn tweeted his frustration that he tried to make Velma a lesbian in “Mystery Incorporated.”
“In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” he wrote. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
In 2020 “Mystery Incorporated” producer Tony Cervone wrote on Instagram:
“I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why…”
