Khloe Kardashian stunned viewers of “The Kardashians” reality TV series when she revealed she’s having difficulty bonding with her son, Tatum Thompson.
Tatum was born in August to a surrogate. Khloe recently revealed his name on the show.
Khloe was praised for her “honesty” about renting another woman’s uterus to carry and deliver her second child by L.A. Lakers player Tristan Thompson.
In the 3rd episode of the series, the mom-of-2 opened up about the “transactional process” of paying a surrogate to carry her baby.
Khloe was in the delivery room as the surrogate suffered through the birthing process. Then the baby was taken into another room with Khloe.
“I buried my head in the sand during that pregnancy,” Khloe said in a confessional on the show.
“When I went to the hospital, that was the first time it really registered, and it has nothing to do with the baby. I felt really guilty that this woman just had my baby, and then I take the baby and I go to another room and you’re separated. It’s such a transactional experience because it’s not about him.”
She added: “I wish someone was honest about surrogacy and the difference of it. It’s still great. It’s just very different.”
Khloe, 38, didn’t disclose the amount she paid to the woman, but similar surrogacy transactions cost anywhere from $24,000 to $85,000.
Conservative commentator Candace Owens applauded Khloe for speaking out about professional breeding which she called an “unspeakable evil.”
“Breeders do not do it to animals,” Candace said.
Khloe also shares a daughter, True, with Tristan. There are many who believe Khloe didn’t give birth to True either. They believe a surrogate carried True, and that Khloe was never pregnant.
Advocates of surrogates say they provide a much-needed service for women who are unable to reproduce or carry a fetus to term. They also say some surrogates are poor and the money they receive can be life-changing.
