Alex Jones suffered another legal setback in bankruptcy court, according to Reuters. A judge ruled the conservative blogger can’t use bankruptcy to wipe away $1.1 billion in punitive damages awarded in the Sandy Hook Elementary defamation lawsuit.
Bankruptcy can only wipe out debts if they don’t result from “willful or malicious injury,” according to U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston, Texas.
Jones previously lost cases in Connecticut and Texas. He was found guilty of intentionally defaming the parents of the slain school children. The courts ordered Jones to pay $1.5 billion in damages.
On Thursday, Judge Lopez ruled that the InfoWars host can’t wipe away $1.1 billion of those damages because they were awarded for intentional infliction of emotional distress.
But the judge ruled that $324 million in attorneys’ fees could be discharged in the Connecticut case.
Jones’ attorneys had argued that he did not lie when he called the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting a hoax.
Jones has reportedly transferred his assets into his relatives’ names.
