Update, Oct. 9, 2023 at 8:30 AM:
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens approved a plan to house the homeless in shipping containers while immigrants stay in hotels.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dickens signed an executive order in August authorizing $4 million to build about 40 rooms inside shipping containers in a parking lot downtown at 184 Forsyth Street.
“The current plan is to include en-suite bathrooms and kitchenettes in every room,” said Josh Humphries, the mayor’s senior housing advisor.
The shipping containers will also feature larger kitchens, dining rooms, laundry and office areas, AJC.com reported.
Using shipping containers to house the homeless has been seen in New Jersey, Los Angeles, and other cities, where illegal immigrants are housed in hotels.
Bomb threats were called into Atlanta City Hall in downtown Atlanta on Saturday, Oct. 7, a day after it was reported that Mayor Dickens is preparing for an influx of illegal immigrants from New York and Chicago, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The Atlanta Police Department, Homeland Security, a bomb squad and K9 officers swept the entire building before giving the “all clear” to allow city workers back inside.
The mayor’s offices are on the second floor of City Hall. The Atlanta City Council also holds their meetings in the building.
Dickens asked the City Council for nearly $7 million for shelter in Atlanta area hotels, food, and other necessities for thousands of migrants who have poured over the southern border into the U.S.
His request was approved by the City Council. The money will go to feed the migrants, put them up in hotels and meet other basic needs, according to FOX 5.
Other sanctuary cities are struggling with the influx of immigrants bused from the border state of Texas.
Kids in a youth football program in Chicago were evicted from their sports facility to turn it into shelter for illegal immigrants.

Over 600 Chicago residents attended a community meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 3 to show support for kids in the Amundsen Park youth football program who are being kicked out of their sports facility.
“You want to take the little scraps of resources we have and put us at the bottom of the barrel? That’s not fair!” one woman yelled.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration has resumed deporting immigrants back to Venezuela, two U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Thursday.
Deportation flights are expected to begin shortly, officials said.
Additionally, Biden has authorized funds to complete construction on former President Trump’s border wall to crack down on those who illegally cross into the country from Mexico.
Biden previously said a border wall would not stop migrants from entering the country illegally.
