It is a longstanding tradition in American culture to kick children out of the house when they reach adulthood. In Black households, “adulthood” means age 18.

It is the equivalent of birds kicking their young out of the nest so they learn how to fly.

Reality stars Mendeecees Harris and Yandy Smith did just that when his eldest son, Mendeecees Jr., turned 18.

In a video shared on their Instagram page, the couple jumped for joy and expressed their happiness that they no longer have to feed and clothe the young man.

They captioned the video:

“He’s finally 18!!!! And we can’t be happier. Can you tell we’re excited??? He’s a man now. I made him make an Amazon registry because we surely done with gifts! Find lil MEndc 18 years old. Yesssssssss!!!!! Happy Birthday My Baby. Love you forever.”

Mendeecees and Yandy helped the young man apply for an apartment, but he will have to get a job and pay his own rent and utilities.

Mendeecees and Yandy share 8-year-old daughter, Skylar, son Omare Harris, 11, and an adopted daughter named Infinity Gilyard.
