Ye West has officially retired after a 28-year career in music. Fellow rapper Rich The Kid shared Ye’s retirement announcement in a text message exchange.
The text read: “I am retiring from professional music..Not sure what else to do.”
Rich The Kid tried his best to discourage Ye from quitting music.
“Retire? Why? How? The ppl NEED you the music you & Ty [Dolla $ign] & we have made was the BIGGEST STAMP in culture to this date in 2024 [sic].”
Rich continued: “Drop Ye about mine & V2 and we do it all over again the kids need you big bra fasho maybe some time to chill but retiring ain’t it.”
Ye has faced multiple lawsuits in recent months. Ye and Ty Dolla $ign recently settled a lawsuit with Donna Summer’s estate stemming from their unauthorized use of a snippet from her song “I Feel Love” on their track “Good (Don’t Die).”
Ye requested permission to use the sample, but was denied. Despite the denial, Ye altered words, and had someone else sing it, or used AI to sound like Donna Summer, according to reports.
Retired rocker Ozzy Osbourne also accused Ye of sampling Black Sabbath’s song “Iron Man” without permission.
In an Instagram post, Osbourne wrote: “I WANT NO ASSOCIATION WITH THIS MAN.”
