The Texas teenager who fatally stabbed a high school star football player will be released from jail today, April 14. Karmelo Anthony, 17, was charged with fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Texas high school track meet earlier this month.

Judge Angela Tucker reduced Karmelo’s $1 million bail to $250,000, allowing him to walk free after supporters donated over $400,000 to GiveSendGo.

Karmelo’s defense attorneys had asked the judge to lower his bond to $150,000. Prosecutors noted that Karmelo’s father, Andrew Anthony, raised over $400,000 in donations. They asked why he couldn’t use that money to pay 10% of Karmelo’s $1 million bond, according to CBS 11 News.

However, Andrew Anthony told the court he did not have access to the GiveSendGo funds and he couldn’t afford to pay the $1 million bond.

Karmelo’s lawyers also said the money was not for his bail but to pay the law firm for his legal defense.

Karmelo’s father was also questioned in court about an altercation involving Karmelo at his high school in February. It isn’t clear whether Karmelo was the aggressor in the February “assault”.

Andrew Anthony described Karmelo as a straight-A student who has never been arrested before. He was the captain of his high school football and track teams and worked at Foot Locker, as well as a second job at H-E-B supermarket.

Karmelo’s bond was reduced to $250,000 on Monday. He will be on house arrest while wearing an ankle monitor.

Judge Tucker told Karmelo he cannot leave his parents’ home without her permission, according to Fox 4 News.
