On July 28, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) introduced legislation to send rebate checks of at least $600 to low-income Americans. The bill is similar to the stimulus checks sent to Americans during COVID.
Sen. Hawley’s American Worker Rebate Act of 2025 would provide a minimum of $600 or a maximum of $2,400 per adult and per dependent child. The bill would be funded by the revenue from President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
Earlier this year, President Trump promised $5,000 DOGE dividend checks to American taxpayers.
But Sen. Hawley proposed a controversial plan that reduced the checks to $2,400.
‘This money is not going to Biden voters’
In an interview with Steve Bannon on “The War Room” podcast, Hawley said he doesn’t want just anyone getting the checks.
“So this is not going to the hedge fund managers or all the Biden voters,” Hawley said. “This is not going to the Wall Street kingpins, they don’t need any of it. This is going to the Trump blue collar voters, the people who Joe Biden crushed. The people who didn’t get a raise under Joe Biden for four long years. The people who can’t afford their gas because Joe Biden shut down our energy. [People] who can’t afford their groceries because Joe Biden juggled the price of everything.”

Hawley continued: “I got the idea from the president. The president said we’ve gotta do a little rebate. Great idea! It tells our people – the working people – that we are here for you…”
Hawley’s comments raised concern among Democrats. The idea of using taxpayer money to reward one political party’s voters over another is unacceptable.
Democrats are expected to oppose Hawley’s bill. But Republicans hold the majority in both the House and the Senate.
If the bill passes, the $2,400 checks would be welcome relief to Americans who are tightening their belts amid soaring grocery and gas prices in today’s economy.
