R&B crooner D’Angelo has died after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Rumors spread online on Tuesday morning that D’Angelo was dead. But a “rep” denied the rumors, saying D’Angelo was still alive.

On Tuesday afternoon, his family confirmed his death in a statement to Variety:

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life… After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025. We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”

D’Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer, is best known for his debut studio album, Brown Sugar which was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 1995.

His sophomore album, Voodoo (2000), debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200.

His single “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” gained notoriety for its controversial music video in which D’Angelo appeared nude and covered with baby oil.

The music video helped solidify D’Angelo’s status as a ces symbol. But fame is a dangerous drug. Toward the end of his Voodoo tour, D’Angelo’s personal issues began to affect his work.

He was uncomfortable with his unwanted status as a ces symbol and he canceled shows and eventually withdrew from the public eye.

According to tour manager Alan Leeds, D’Angelo lacked confidence and he developed a drinking problem.

Eventually, both his follow-up album and tour were scrapped by the record label.

He soon parted ways with manager Dominique Trenier and tour manager Alan Leeds.

After a car accident and an arrest on DUI and marijuana possession charges, D’Angelo was dropped by Virgin Records in 2005.

D’Angelo was unrecognizable when he resurfaced in paparazzi photos in 2012. His weight ballooned over 300 pounds, partly due to his struggles with drugs, alcoholism and depression.

D’Angelo is survived by three children, including a 27-year-old son with the late singer Angie Stone.
