
Kara Liana Braxton, a 2-time WNBA champion, died in a single car accident in Atlanta on Saturday, Feb. 21. She was 43.
According to Cobb County police, Kara Braxton was driving a 2023 Ford Mustang northbound on Interstate 285 when she collided with the concrete median wall just after 5 p.m. on Saturday.
“The Ford continued in a northerly direction against the concrete wall until coming to rest on the left shoulder of I-285 at Cobb Parkway,” police said in a press release.
Braxton was pronounced dead at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga.
“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of 2x WNBA Champion Kara Braxton,” the WNBA said in a statement on X. “Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and former teammates at this time.”

Braxton’s son, University of North Carolina tight end Jelani Thurman, posted photos of himself with his mother on his Instagram story.
“Imma miss my queen!” he wrote in the caption.
Braxton also had a son named Jream Jackson.
Braxton, a 6’6″ center, was selected by the Detroit Shock in the 1st round of the 2005 WNBA draft. She won 2 WNBA championships with the Shock.
She also played for the Tulsa Shock when the team moved to Tulsa before the 2010 season; the Phoenix Mercury, and New York Liberty.
After the WNBA, Braxton played overseas in Turkey, China, Israel and Korea.
