The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office identified 23-year-old Alyssa Paige as the victim in the fatal Beltline stabbing on Thursday.

21-year-old Jahmare Brown is in police custody. He is charged with murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said officers responded to a 911 call around 12:10 p.m. that a woman had been stabbed on the 1700 block of Flagler Avenue NE, near the Beltline.

Paige was rushed to Grady Hospital where she died. Schierbaum said a massive police response worked quickly to apprehend the suspect who was seen riding a bicycle on surveillance cameras near the Beltline.

Brown also attacked a U.S. Postal worker prior to the stabbing before fleeing the scene on a bike. Police used Flock Safety cameras to track down the suspect.

Atlanta is the most surveilled city in America with hundreds of Flock cameras and license plate readers in the Peach city alone.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens reassured residents that there is no danger to the public. “The suspect is in custody… We wanted to make sure that we came here as soon as possible to let the public know that you are safe. This individual is in custody.”

Fox5Atlanta reports Brown may be suffering from a mental health crisis.

The Beltline is a 22-mile corridor of trails connecting marginalized neighborhoods to shopping and commerce in downtown Atlanta. The Beltline generated $23 billion in annual revenue for the city and created 91,000 jobs.

Prominent Atlanta residents criticized the Atlanta Journal newspaper for “burying” the stabbing story on page 8.

Retired Channel 2 investigative news reporter Richard Belcher tweeted: “We’re told the city was ‘shaken,’ schools locked down, ‘massive manhunt,’ mayor wanted to ‘quell fears,’ but story is buried on page 8. Feels like @ajc intentionally downplayed this so as not to stoke crime concerns. Mistake. People will remember this.”
