Xavion Perry III reacted violently when his girlfriend Brooke Smith tried to end their relationship, police said.
Perry, 31, fatally shot the 24-year-old nursing student during an argument on May 26. Brooke died less than three months before she was set to graduate from the University of Florida nursing school.
The shooting happened at Creeks Edge Condos, on Northwest 23rd Boulevard in Gainesville, ABC affiliate WCJB reported.
Brooke died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. She was set to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in nursing in August.
The Yoga Pod in Gainesville, where Brooke worked, announced it would be closed on Wednesday.
“We apologize for any disruption to your practice,” the company wrote. “We ask for your grace, as well as for prayers for peace as we navigate heartbreak and loss.”
Perry led police on a high-speed chase on the evening of May 26. He abandoned his vehicle and jumped off a pier onto a beach.
Officials said Perry was live-streaming on social media during the chase. He mentioned suicidal thoughts during the live-stream.
On Wednesday a body washed up on shore near the 3600 block of Ocean Shore Boulevard in Ormond Beach, police said. The body was confirmed to be Perry by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
He had a criminal history of grand theft, domestic violence and resisting arrest. Friends told investigators Perry couldn’t accept the end of their relationship.
“Several people gave us the information,” said Art Forgey, a Public Information Officer with Gainesville Police Department. “Apparently, our victim was trying to end this relationship or distance herself from the suspect, and that’s what led to the altercation where she was ultimately shot.”
