The actor formerly known as Robert Arquette died at age 47 following a “lengthy illness” on Sunday, Sept. 11.
After deciding to live his life full-time as a cross-dresser, Arquette went by the name Alexis Arquette. Alexis was a cabaret performer and transgender activist.
Per his request, Arquette’s friends and family members reportedly cheered his “transition” when he died.
Arquette, who never married and had no children, leaves behind 5 siblings, including actresses Rosanna, 57, and Patricia, 48, who penned a moving tribute to him.
Patricia Arquette referred to her brother by feminine pronouns in her letter.
“Despite the fact that there are few parts for trans actors, she refused to play roles that were demeaning or stereotypical. She was a vanguard in the fight for understanding and acceptance for all trans people.
“Alexis was born as Robert, our brother. We loved him the moment he arrived. But he came in as more than a sibling — he came as our great teacher. As Alexis transitioned into being a woman, she taught us tolerance and acceptance. As she moved through her process, she became our sister, teaching us what real love is.
“We are all heartbroken that she is no longer with us, but we are grateful for the grace and kindness we were all shown during this difficult time”
