Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones tried to appease everyone by asking his team to kneel down before the national anthem during a Monday Night Football game at the University of Phoenix Stadium, where they took on the Arizona Cardinals.

Jones’s compromise backfired badly, as boos rained down on the kneeling Cowboys. The team linked arms and bent their knees to show “unity” in their hatred for the president of the United States. Then they stood up as the anthem was played.

The Arizona Cardinals also stood and linked arms, but they did not kneel down before the anthem played.

Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant said the display was in direct response to President Trump saying team owners should fire SOBs who protest the flag.

“I feel like that’s the true definition of unity,” Bryant said. “Trump can’t divide this.”

“[What Trump said was] super disrespectful,” Bryant told the Dallas Morning News. “We showed great unity tonight… We’re not going to let a guy like that tear us apart. Not just us but this whole entire league. We’re a prime example of positive people. He should have never said that. It was a clear punch in the face. I feel like we made up for that.”

President Trump was among the television audience tuning in to see if the Cowboys would protest. Trump tweeted about the Cowboys early Tuesday morning.

“Ratings for NFL football are way down except before game starts, when people tune in to see whether or not our country will be disrespected!” he tweeted. “The booing at the NFL football game last night, when the entire Dallas team dropped to its knees, was the loudest I have ever heard. Great anger…. But while Dallas dropped to its knees as a team, they all stood up for our National Anthem. Big progress being made — we all love our country!”

The Cowboys defeated the Cardinals by a score of 28-17.
