Police say the man who assaulted Mayor Kim Bracey at her York, Pennsylvania campaign office was her son Brandon Anderson, 30.
Anderson was arrested and charged in the brutal attack on his mother which occurred on September 30.
Anderson was charged with punching his mother in the face, knocking her to the ground, and stomping on her back, head and face while she was down, according to the York Daily Record.
The paper detailed the attack, which was documented in the police report as an assault on a “Cecilia Bracey” at the mayor’s campaign office. Cecilia is the mayor’s legal first name.
Some York residents are questioning the delay in reporting the news and suggested a coverup to protect Anderson, who is a known heroin addict.
The York Daily Record reports that “neither the city or city police issued a news release about the attack on the mayor” at the time of the assault.
Bracey, who has since returned to the campaign trail, defended her son and asked for privacy as she runs for her third term as mayor.
“Like thousands of families, our family is confronting the fact that my adult son is battling an opioid addiction,” Bracey said in a statement. “No family is immune from this epidemic — which is why we must do everything in our power to solve it.”
A witness who intervened during the savage attack told the York Daily Record that Anderson knocked his mother to the floor and hit her with a wooden flag pole.
The mayor was holding a “Biker for Bracey” event at her campaign office the day of the attack. Bikers who attended the event also intervened and pulled Anderson away from his mother.
A Democratic campaign operative who said he was speaking for the family said the mayor was doing okay physically but the family was shaken, according to the York Daily Record.
Anderson was held in prison for a week before he bonded out on Friday.
Police did not say what provoked the attack, which is not the first time he assaulted his mother.
