The Superfly remake is on pace to gross $10 million at the box office. Movie-goers stayed away from theaters on the film’s opening day on Wednesday. The movie took in just $1.2 million at 2,200 theaters, Variety.com reports.
Superfly stars Trevor Jackson (“Black-ish”) as Youngblood Priest, a conceited drug dealer with an upswept pompadour hairdo that looks out of place — even in Atlanta, where the movie was filmed on location.
Staying true to 1972’s Super Fly script, Priest needs one last drug deal to finance his retirement from the game — but the drug deal goes horribly wrong.
The original Super Fly, directed by Gordon Parks and starring the perfectly cast Ron O’Neal as Priest, raked in $30 million in 1972 — an amazing sum considering that tickets cost a dollar back then. And you could buy popcorn, a soda, and a hot dog for $2.
The budget for the original Super Fly came in at just over $500,000.
The Superfly soundtrack, which was written and produced by rapper Future Hendrix, pays minimal homage to the original classic score composed and arranged by the late great Curtis Mayfield.
