Democratic Senator Kamala Harris has announced her intention to run for President in 2020. The former prosecutor seeks to become America’s second mixed race President. Barack Obama was the first.
Harris announced her decision to run for President on ABC’s Good Morning America on Monday, Jan. 21.
“I am running for president of the United States and I’m very excited about it,” she said. “I love my country and this is a moment in time where I feel a sense of responsibility to fight for who we are.”
Harris, 54, ended speculation about whether she would run. She previously served as Attorney General of California.
Ms. Harris’s campaign slogan is “For the People. She plans to campaign on a platform of free handouts, including a monthly tax credit of $500 for families earning less than $100,000 a year.
Ms. Harris was born in Oakland, California, and she is a graduate of Howard University and University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
She is the daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother.
Ms. Harris is married to Douglas Emhoff. The couple is childless.
