Noted author Terry McMillan stirred up a hornet’s nest of controversy yesterday on her Twitter page when she referred to the children of Will and Jada Smith as “arrogant.”
Bloggers such as myself applauded Ms. McMillan for being brave enough to voice her opinion on the way Will and Jada push their children into the public eye.
I’m personally disappointed that McMillan caved in to the pressure from her industry friends and retracted her statements.
A certain Superstar asked me for my opinion on this issue this morning. I told her that the mother of Will’s oldest child, Trey, obviously instilled values in him and taught him to have high self-esteem. Unlike Jada Pinkett-Smith, who treats her kids like they are her friends.
Here’s what Ms. McMillan tweeted today:
I apologize for using the word pimp and exploit in referring to the Smith children. It was insensitive of me and wrong. Twitter is not the best forum to express some things. I didn’t know folks would take my opinion so personally. It is amazing, though, how fast an unflattering comment gets retweeted versus one that’s flattering. I’m done with this issue. My opinion isn’t going to change anything.
There are a lot more important things going on in the world right now. My Mama used to say: “They’ll talk about you if you do. And talk about you if you don’t. Let ‘em talk.” Some folks look for a reason to criticize you. They’re getting off on it and are saying much worse things than I did. I’ve got work to do. I hope everybody who has something important to do today besides worry about the Smith children, does it.
And for those of you who were so offended by what I said or thought I was being disrespectful, unfollow me.

She is the one who is arrogant, she is going around giving her opinion about people I doubt she knows, or have ever even been around. What is disgusting is that she is talking about minors in way which she did. Only thing I know about her, is she was trying to get her grove back and ended up with a man who liked men. There are tons of families that push there children into the spotlight who don’t want to famous and just want to be normal. I never heard that Trey was raised more by Will and Jada than his mother. I always heard they all co-parented. I think Trey’s being grounded has more to do with the fact that he stays out of the limelight (entertainment industry) and is doing what normal teens his age do. Hey all!! Newbie =) Far as Ms. McMillan is concerned based off her statement above I don’t necessarily think she was taking back what she said nor apologizing for anything except for some of her choice words she used in her original opinion. I mean it is what it is. We all have an opinion. My thing is its all fine and good for these children to be doing acting,singing, whatever positive as long as they are also focusing on school. Fortunately for Will and Jada’s children they don’t have to worry about a back up plan, but for all the other children of the world not born with a silver spoon,education should be a number one priority. Everything else is just extra.
Its sad that our youth nowadays would rather model themselves after the Nicki Minaj’s of this world rather then look towards more influential and positive structures..but that’s they society we live in and parents encouraged this. Whatever the case may be in Will and Jada’s situation realistically speaking it doesn’t make a difference what these children do..they don’t have to wrry about making money or having money. They will be taken care of regardless.

THEY ALL ARE RAISING HIM BUT HE RESIDES NOW AND HAS BEEN FOR MANY YEARS IN THE SMITH HOUSEHOLD.

their kids working and they’re too young. if they start at 21, now they’re too old. I say let them have their lil careers. should education be made a priority though? absolutely. it’s all about balance, especially for kids.

Cause ol crazy azz Jada couldn’t force him too like she did the other kids. She’s failed at every attempt to be a “big name star” in her own right. She tried t.v. and sucked, was in videos and looked like a teenage boy, tried movies and can only be a small “costar” (if that)… even tried music and failed. Now she’s back to t.v., at least for the next few weeks till this show is cancelled. Can anyone tell me ONE award she’s won in 20 years of acting

If Terry is in the Smith circle… Which she is so her opinion is valid and holds merit. I dont know the kids personally to call them out on arrogance BUT what I do know is Will and Jada are getting their kids prepared very early at what the rest of their lives will be like.
When you live your life in the “public eye” you no longer own the right to privacy and “your business is everyones business” So if this is the life they choose for their kids then just like everyone goes in on them they can expect for their kids to be ridiculed the same exact way…
