The horrific story of a family found slaughtered in their home took a strange turn when a reporter stumbled upon the bloody murder weapon earlier today.
A writer for the Atlanta journal newspaper, found the bloody knife on the patio of the Lithonia home where 3 people — a woman and two children — were brutally stabbed to death Sunday evening.
According to DeKalb sheriff’s records, Eugene Quatron McCoy, 21, was booked into the jail at 4:24 a.m. Monday on three murder charges. The records at the jail indicate he lived at the house in the 7100 block of Rockland Road.
The house had been thoroughly searched by DeKalb police, who somehow missed the bloody knife lying under a chair on the patio.
Incredibly, a DeKalb County Police spokeswoman said she did not know if the blood soaked knife was related to the deadly stabbings.
Broken glass from a window lay scattered on the patio near where the knife was found. A slashed window screen lay discarded on the steps.
According to the AJC, a woman survived the carnage inside the house. The woman managed to escape by running through the woods to a home in a nearby subdivision to call for help. She was transported to a local hospital where she is listed in critical condition.
The dead woman is believed to be McCoy’s mother. The identifies of all 4 victims are being withheld until the next of kin is notified.
Police had been called to the home on six previous occasions to arrest McCoy for allegedly violating stay away orders. He was last arrested on January 8 on a criminal trespass charge, and was released from the jail on March 16.

Yes, reporters are often at crime scenes taking pictures of the goings on outside. It just so happens that the murder weapon was outside too.

Sometimes the reporters beat the POLICE to the crime scene. Happens all the time actually.
Most newsrooms have a police scanner. So when the call comes in on the radio they hear it too.
I read this in the AJC this morning. I really having a time keeping faith in our youth when I read mess like this. You know how personal it is to stab someone! And then for it to be your own family. I will pray for this woman and her two babies in heaven.
BUT reporters are not supposed to compromise ANY investigation…and it is industry ahhh courtsey I will say…to NOT enter on to ANY crime scene unless invited by the police OR unless the scene has been “cleared”….which this one seems to have been and the police missed something on THEIR end.
This is sad. Going to AJC to read more.
Gosh I can’t even say these kids are devils – I find them demonic – IMO which no regard – the Devil is smarter than his minions – I swear I wonder if it’s illegal substance abuse or they are just CRAZY!
You learn something new everyday. I had no idea news people were allowed to traipse through crime scenes discovering evidence.

But seriously, like KDUB said, once the crime scene is gone over THOUROUGHLY I think it becomes open to the media.
I have no idea what happened here but none of it sounds right. Hopefully the only survivor will be able to shed some light on this soon.

Well…thats just another reason why I moved OUT of Dekalb Co. No shade to the real officers, but Dekalb Co.’s Police Dept is more a fraternity than officers who actually do “police” work. their Response time SUCKS, reports be missing information, etc. So its no surprise if the officers missed that blood stained knife. My prayers go out to the family.

I wouldn’t thought it was after they cleared it, but dang, the murder just happened yesterday. Before today is over the murder scene is cleared and a reporter finds a bloody knife? I think I was thinking about TV where people go see the crime scene a day or so later and there is still crime scene tape there.
Did they not search the patio, because the knife is very obvious and I don’t see how they could have missed that. However, this is a sad sad story people are loosing their minds and I blame it on all these drugs that people are using these days.
It may be drugs or he has some mental issues that have not been addressed sadly.

Apparently some places just randomly store bloody knives and it was a coincidence that several people were murdered at this location by stabbing.
How does DeKalb County select their officers??? I guess if you can put your uniform on with out help you’re “over qualified” for them.

Well it was in the evening when the murders happened, so it was probably dark outside, and I would suspect most of the investigation took place inside the house where the bodies where found. JMO

A lot of kids today were born without a conscience. I don’t know if it’s caused by what the mothers ate or drank. But it’s an epidemic in our community.

we just had a 16 white kid here that killed his grandparent with a machete, then recorded the crime scene and sowed how he was pokin the grandfather in the eye with the knife to make sure he was dead!

yeah, just saw this story on ch2. how crazy? it’s mistakes like that–that lead perps to walking.
I just found out yesterday that the mother that was killed was my toddlers afternoon teacher. this is so sad she was a really sweet woman and our kids at the school. She had always been afraid of her older son he was a mess.
