On Saturday, Oct. 8, we posted Lil Wayne’s “Public Service Announcement” video that we found on Derick G‘s blog.

To be honest, we didn’t even watch one second of that video, because, after all, Lil Wayne was in it. But we regret not watching the video after reading the following email from loyal reader SouthernLegalDiva.

Sandra,

I know you do “medical minutes” frequently on your blog. Recently, Lil Wayne posted a PSA wherein he explains his use of Promethazine DM Syrup as being prescribed by a doctor as a sleep aid. I have never heard of this usage. I could only watch about 6 mins of the video, as the BS level was through the roof. It was featured on Straightfromthea.com

Thanks, SouthernLegalDiva

It’s clear that Lil Wayne is still under the influence of drugs, specifically purple drank cough syrup — but he’s doing it legally, right under the nose of his probation officer. He says so right there in the video.

Weezy explained that he gets his concoction of drugs from “a pharmacy, dude!” One of the prescription drugs that he holds up to the camera is Phenergan-Codeine (Promethazine and cough suppressant syrup). Phenergan® is an antihistamine that is prescribed to relieve the symptoms of allergies, such as itching, runny nose and certain skin rashes. Codeine elixir (syrup) is prescribed as a cough suppressant. The combination is known on the streets as “syrup” or “purple drank.”

One of the side effects of Phenergan® is drowsiness. Lil Wayne claims this is the reason his doctor prescribed the Phenergan-Codeine elixir (syrup). But doctors usually prescribe Phenergan® in tablet form — not elixir (syrup). The elixir form is always prescribed for children and patients who are unable to swallow tablets, such as comatose patients with feeding tubes in their stomachs.

Lil Wayne is not comatose nor does he have a feeding tube.

In the video, Weezy referred to himself as a “machine” who was always on. So, because he was always on, he couldn’t sleep. Therefore, we found it interesting that Weezy said his doctor prescribed Adderall for him.

Adderall is a stimulant that is normally prescribed to children with ADHD (attention deficit disorder). Stimulants such as amphetamines are also known on the streets as “uppers”. They are in the same family as cocaine and Ecstasy.

Why would a doctor prescribe a stimulant such as Adderall to an insomniac who complains that he can’t sleep? Wouldn’t that drug combination be the same as taking uppers and downers?

It’s clear that Weezy’s doctor prescribes whatever Weezy asks for — just like Michael Jackson, who is now dead.
