Not to brag, but my readers are so perceptive and intelligent. One such reader, N.D., found it peculiar that Hollywood socialite Nicole Richie named both of her children after characters in activist Sister Souljah’s books.
Coincidence? Read on…
I would love to read your readers comments about Nicole Richie naming her children after characters in a book by Sista Soulja “The Coldest Winter Ever.” She named her daughter Harlow Winter and I didn’t think much of it, but now she named her son Sparrow James Midnight. I wonder what the heck is going on in this chic’s mind? This book must be the only book she’s ever voluntarily read or something. What’s even worst is these fictional characters are notorious drug dealers and murder’s. I wonder what it is about these character that Nicole felt constituted naming her children after them? Not to mention Winter and Midnight were lovers in the book.
What who is sistah soulja what the fuck who reads these hoodrat books??? Certainley not a rich white girl from bel air, your reader n.d is stretching and if I was n.d id use that “perception and intelligence” and find a job
COLDEST WINTER EVER IS STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS TO DATE THATS THE BOOK THAT STARTED MY ADDICITON WITH URBAN BOOKS.
Ansd if she did so what, Im just glad Nicole has changed her lifestlye Paris and Lindsay take note.
LMAO @ Charles why o why
I LOVE that BOOK! I am still waiting on the movie!
I agree with LovelyLady and Daisy, this book is one of the best books I’ve ever read and trust me, I’ve read a few, being a librarian and all. It’s raw and it’s real, and it’s well-written, the story flows, jumps off the page! (Me and my husband read it in two nights!) Er young black American, and white included, should read it. Matter of fact, it should be on the “must read” for high school students.
Did anyone watch RHOA last night?
Dude was killin me in those tight azz jeans and heels!! hahaa!!
NeNe had me weak when she put that wig on and started clowning Kim.
For some reason I’m starting not to like Lisa… she really does think she’s all that.
@daisy
You would
I LOVE COLDEST WINTER!! what ever happened to jada pinkett smith making a movie out of it?
my first urban book was omar tyree’s “flyy girl” then i read coldest winter next
about the kids names…. im sure thats just a coincidence, shes probably never read either of those books. lol
Maybe she just likes the names. The names of characters from a book doesn’t have to affect the characters of her children cause they have the same names.
I also loved the Coldest Winter Ever but my addiction with urban books was over by the time the second book came out. I got so tired of women being cheated on and low down dirty men that hustle instead of work just to much drama for me. It got old quick.
RHOA is hilarious!! I had to pause and rewind on chunky dude in the heels and skinny skinny jeans.
I think Nene is my favorite. I love Lisa but I think hands down Nene is my favorite. Just a little bit ghetto you know hooood.
Sheree is a freakin azz lunatic. COMPLETELY!! She is so unattractive to me but I think it has more to do with her attitude than her face. Not only did she show up late but then she showed up in jeans and sweatshirt. She never dresses like that. She only dressed like that to prove how unimportant Lisa’s thing was. No matter what she thinks of Lisa copying her or whatever she should have supported her girl. We all know that my son had a recital crap was just that a bunch of crap. She’s a mess!!
@Pinky YES NeNe keeps me laughing each wk. When her son said he was on the honor roll and she clowned him lol I was hollering. Dwight had on to much make up but I love him as well. I wanted more from Lisa’s clothes maybe next time lol
pinky that dude was off the chain in his skinny jeans, heels and one shoulder-ed sweater
nene took the kim and big papa jokes a lil too far… u gotta know when to chill out and she obviously doesnt know when.
@Lady
Flyygirl was a bomb ass book also. Unfortunately his writing went downhill after that.
Do you remember if there was a lot of sex in that book? I think I may want my teenage daughter to read that one.
@Mia Sheree had the nerve to talk about other folks in jeans and t shirt when thats what she had on lol She has always been my least fav lol
@Daisy, Dwight def had on too much foundation, eyeliner etc.
@Mia I agree Flygirl was good then Omar lost it and I don’t remember if there was that much sex but if your daughter is say 16 or so I think she can handle it and has seen and maybe read worse lol
I wish Lolita Files would write another book I mean she just stopped writing period lol I loved her books
@Lady, Nene did run on a little too long but I still thought it was funny
I love how Lisa’s “stylist” put Sheree on blast..
@Lady although she may have taken it to far I also feel it was edited that way as well and NeNe was telling the truth Kim just said she needed her own job cause Poppa takes care of everythng lol so she didnt lie lol She should be happy she has Poppa to pay for all her D&G lol
@Pinky that KNEE GROW was on the street waiting for her to roll up to put her on blast lol She couldnt even get out the car and he was in her face but he was so cool with it lol
although the book are fictional @ lease everyone knows a person who lived like the characters, i knew a few in the section of Brooklyn that did. And their life kinda panned out the way the book ended too.
I did read the Coldest Winter ever, but not the Midnight book. They must have become lovers later, because in TCWE, Midnight thought Winter was immature and had nothng to do with her.
Personally, I can’t stand the “urban” novels. The plots are usually ridiculous and the characters are just caricatures. But, I was an English major in school, so I’m very critical of literature. I mean, just the titles “Hustler’s Dream, Roundaway Girl,” etc… I just can’t get with them. I read one once where all the girls would have threesomes and all these sex acts with each other and then they plotted to get one’s boyfriend back after she saw him having sex with his friend??!!! I was like come on!
So, in Nicole’s defense – maybe she just liked the names. lol
@Daisy-yeah he was pretty smooth with it.. hahaa
I seriously doubt that her son had some kind of concert going on.. she coulda showed a lil support.
I missed this show last nite but I usually watch this mess simply because I love to see black folks on tv, even if it’s a frivolous mess. (I love me some Chance and Real also!) As for NeNe, my best friend of 40+ yrs recently told me that I remind her of NeNe. I frowned when she first told me this but the more I watch, the more I agree. She’s sassy, smart and she speaks her mind yet she can be warm, kind and very diplomatic. When you get to know her, you like her. Ghetto? Don’t we all have a touch of ghettoness? If you don’t, I guess you grew up with a silver spoon in your mouth and a private nanny to take care yo spoiled ass. I’m just saying, for what it’s worth. Have a great weekend folks and KEEP HOPE ALIVE!And pray for Obama. He can certainly use all the prayers we send up. Peace.
Divine you and I are in total agreement and I was not an English major. I think after a certain age I just couldn’t tolerate anymore and had to look for other types of reading material.
@Daisy my daughter is 16 but her dad is really funny about her reading books with sex scenes he acts like she’s gonna run out and jump the first D&*K she sees. I had to tell him we’re (women) not wired like that.
Winter is not in Midnights book at all and that book starts off VERY VERY VERY SLOWWWWWWWWW then it finally picks up and you can’t put it down lol
@miamore
i cant remember if that book had lots of sex in it or not. i know its not as bad as coldest winter though
@daisy
i have Lolita Files taste like chicken but i havent read it yet. had it like 3 years now lol
is papa and kim still together? i read they broke up, but he still paying for her stuff?
I forgot all about NeNe doing Kim.. She even knew she took that too far. I will say she does support the girls in whatever they do.
Wendy doing them on Ellen with the finger puppets was funny.
NeNe and her son really made me think? When do you cut the strings and let your son take responsibility for himself. If I was her I would probably be the same way. American’s put a lot of pressure on kids leaving the house at __ age. Is there really an age when a boy should become a man? And if they don’t want to go to college (I shudder at the thought) what as a parent do you do? Scares me.
Personally, I don’t know if I would put my baby out… he is probably going to grow up to be a momma’s boy..
@Mia I have read that book 3x and I don’t recall it being sexed out lol I could be wrong though. As long as she is not reading Zane she is good lol I never read the “urban hood stories” I do read alot of black authors though.
@PA I wasn’t saying Nene was ghetto. I was actually repeating her line.
Maybe your not watching that much after all.
The ghetto line and the twin line are my favorites. My daughter and I just love finding an oppurtunity to repeat them.
Ice you nip it in the bud early. NeNe admitted she gave him everything she was a single parent for yrs. If your son doesnt want to go to college then he should be able to tell you what he plans to do to make a living and implement that plan. You have to stress education early as well. Not all boys are mamas boys cause my brother surely isnt and my mama made sure of that she always told him you will NOT be a sorry man lol My daddy(who was in the house) also helped but he was very laid back my mama did all the work when it came to us lol
As far as the age goes if my child goes to college and graduates I would give them a yr or so to find a job and get a place in an economy like today it may be harder and take them longer but as long as I can see an effort I will work with them but I know I wanted to move out ASAP cause I had FREEDOM for 4yrs then came back to my parents rules my daddy and I clashed cause I did stay out all night and he had a FIT and that is when I knew it was time for me to GO! I was 22-23
Oh and I like the name Winter. Yt always name their kids after something someone weird. Nick Cage named his son Kaliah or something crazy after the superman charc. One of those Kate chicks named her child Apple.
But
Black people are always catching flack for the names we give our kids. You won’t hire Shaniqua but you’ll hire Shallow (sp)
i doubt if nicole can read and if she can nicole is not reading no black books. chile bye. i just don’t get the feeling she identifies with “us” you feel me?

There is no cut off age and not all kids go to college. My son is almost 22 and lives with me. I am not going to throw him in the streets to fend for himself and have to beg, borrow and steal to survive. He does not give us any problems so he can stay. It’s usually the girls who leave first. My bothrer did not leave home until his late 20’s.
One of those Kate chicks named her child Apple.
———————————
that was gwenyth (sp). named her son moses.
just read charles comment. he cracks me the hell up.
@ kwall lol

~~~~~~~~~~
Nicole has ppl fooled. She just wanted to fit in. She is smart, plays many instruments and went to the best schools. She may identify with her white side more but that is no surprise.
Anna I would kick my BUM child out in a heartbeat IF he was not working or actively looking for a job and was abled bodied. Now in this economy jobs are scarce but w/ NeNe’s son he would have to tigthen up as in go back to school, find a real job etc or he would be giving 6mths to be out of my house tough love is bytch but it has saved many a life I am sure!
@ Daisy
Some things are eaiser said than done. All I do is drum in his head how important college is. To the point he’s like I know, I know… poor kid just started 3rd grade. & being a momma’s boy doesn’t mean you are a loser to me.
NeNe was better this episode with the exception of how long she clowned Kim. That was hilarious though. Just when I start liking Sheree that bish reminds me the reasons I don’t. At least Lisa actually pulled her chit together, bish you still haven’t produced any clothes and like that man said, since when was a children’s concert that late AND more importantly when do you spend time with your kids. We see Kims kids more than anyone on that show. Then she’s clowing how people are dressed, bish you had on jeans and a hoodie, you blended right in. Like someone else said she dressed like that on purpose too.
As far as the topic HAIL NO I don’t think Winter or Midnight was taken from the Coldest Winter Ever BUT that book is DA CHIT!!! I haven’t read Midnight yet but the boy on the cover is NOT who I visioned as Midnight. I always envisioned a young Morris Chestnut, Tyrese, Derek Luke type looking fella.
Oh, and Charles SMH at you not knowing who Sista Soulja is, even if you don’t care for the book.
Shauny, i saw the cover of that book and was immediately turned off. i didnt even wanna read it. lol
midnight was supposed to be SUPA fine
Anna, I think Nicole is pretty smart too, she dumbed herself down for entertainment purposes.
Isc @ comment 29, I always point that out. Stars name their kids all these crazy azz names to be “unique” but blacks are ghetto and embarrassing when they name their child an odd name. Rumor, Apple, Mox, Moon, WTF
I forgot about NeNe and her son. He’s what 19. I would give my son more time to figure out what he wanted to do with himself. I wouldn’t force him to go to school but he will know that I’m not going to be taking care of him much longer so he needs to start making grown man choices with his life. I stress education to my kids as well and hope all of them go to college but you can’t force them too. It’s only going to be your money loss when they flunk out because they don’t want to be there in the first place.
@iscream – congrats!!! Make sure you post info on where we can pick it up…gotta support the fam =)
i just don’t get how she identifies with her white side more @anna when she was raised by BLACK people from alabama.
He is going to have to grow up real quick. He has a baby girl on the way. He doesn’t really live with me but I have not kicked him out. He left months ago but did not clear out his room.
yes@ iscream let us know.
Shauny I was so MAD at the guy she choose to go on the cover of Midnight and that it was so freaking slow in the beginning but I did enjoy the book once it picked up. Midnight was very young in the book as well. I thought he was older than Winter so maybe this was before Winter
Look at who her friends are. She was engaged to DJ AM and hung out with Paris and Nikki and is now with Joe.
@daisy
was winter even mentioned in the book?
That is why I said they need to come up with a plan for their life if college isnt for them. I would not force my child to go to college although I am sure many kid has been and in the end appreciated it.
KWall although her parents may have been from AL if she went to all YT schools and what not that is what she knows as well and identified with I always wondered if she has a relationship with her Aunt Shelia E and yes Nicole is very bright
@LJ No she was not. My sister was TICKED she thought it was part II and its so NOT!
Nicole Ritchie real father is the brother of artist Shelia E. so she is part spanish i think. The real parents used to work with Lionel Ritchie when he was touring and they became young parents and couldn’t take care of her or something like that. He became her god father then adopted her.
i have an author that yall should check out.
CARL WEBER
his books are off the chain
@daisy
glad i didnt read it. lol id be pissed. she should make a sequel
the sequel to flyy girl was horrible
smh
I, too, would be surprised to find out that Nicole Ritchie reads “urban” books too. I also hate most works in this genre, as they’re mostly fluff & no filler.
I read Coldest Winter Ever when I was in high school & I thought it was good then, when I tried to reread it a couple of years back, I realized that it’s not that good. I mean it just didn’t do it for me at all, I didn’t get a new perspective or see something differently; great books do that. Like Native Son or Things Fall Apart. I read both every year & I’m wowed each time. I think the only book in contemporary black literature that I like is Child of God by Lolita Files, that’s a book.
I read those books as well Karaz I read a lil of everything
LJ I read Carl Weber his books are all the same now need him to grow
@Lady I saw agree. I was sooo disappointed in the sequel to flyygirl. I remember I was waiting for it too what a waste.
Who was the writer?? Omar Tyree or Jerome Dickey??
@ Iscream… You can learn alot about people through the comments they post… I enjoy your comments along with KWAL, Kym (whom BTW has been ghost lately), Krisi, Bird, Elove, East and Brenden. So I would definitely support your book. Can you share a little about it? I’m a word lover… I enjoy both reading and writing them.
@daisy
his last 2 books were a little different. ‘something on the side’ and ‘up to no good’
@miamore
lol i forgot all about Eric Jerome Dickey, i think i still have some of his books that i havnt read yet
Omar Tyree was the author of flyy girl. he had For The Love of Money as the sequel then had Boss Lady to complete the trilogy… they were so boring.
LJ I have read every C Weber book lol they are running together he needs to step it up
Ice I will buy your book as well
Great post! I have read all of these books that have been mentioned except the extremely urban books (hustla’s wife, ghetto princess, etc). I also haven’t read Midnight. Once I heard it was a prequel (sp) to Coldest Winter Ever and not a sequel, I lost interest. Flyy Gyrl was also my first urban novel and that got me hooked on reading those types of books. Omar did fall off after Tracee (Flyy Gyrl). She got boring when she wasn’t hood anymore.I love Carl Webber as well. Victoria Christopher Murray is a great author. She writes Christian Fiction but they are full of drama and Jesus, so they are awesome. Eric J. Dickey is the best. I have read all of his books and will be getting his new one when he comes to Augusta (my hometown) for a book signing next weekend. I am a nerd. I read anything I can get my hands on!
Congrats Isc!!!! I commend you. I always wondered how in the hell do you even start off writing a book. It takes me a damn month to write a paper! LOL! Enjoy your weekends! I’m headed to the beach for my last mini vacation before summer ends.
@Dani I read Victoria as well lol I want E Dickey to get over this contract killer character I am going to get his new book but I want him to move on just like Mary B needs to let Honey go her books suck when she is a main character
havent heard of Victoria Christopher Murray , thanks for the recommendation i will be checking her out. i love reading
@ Daisy as much as I love reading I’ve never read any of Mary B. Morrison’s books. Now Mary Monroe is a good writer. She wrote the God Don’t Like Ugly series. She has another one coming out I think it is God ain’t Blind. I don’t know if I am gonna get it or not because I feel like you and how you feel about Honey. I think that she has used the characters to death!!!!
Ya’ll should read “Dutch I & II” by teri woods (Kwame)
Aw ww w you guys are so supportive.
I’m in the last process of getting it published. It has been getting reviews. A lil busy at work
but will put the summary up as soon as I can.. Thanks
yaaay isc. congrats.
ive read God Don’t Like Ugly… i got bored with the 2nd one though
@Dani I read Marry Monroe as well lol I am a speed reader always have been I can read 2-3 books a day if thats all I am doing. Since going back to school I dont have time to read anything other than my school work. I did read Push a few weeks back when I had jury duty
Yeah I doubt if Nicole ever read TCWE. Y’all know how yt people r when it comes to naming their kids…Anywhoo,
@ Iscream, pls keep us posted on ur book. I would like to read it as well.
And also, I haven’t read any hood books in a while but Flyy Girl was the best book i ever read in that category. TCWE was cool, but I say that Flyy Girl was better to me, that’s just my opinion. Another hood book that is good to check out and the last hood selection that I read is titled:
“B-More Careful” by Shannon Holmes. It kinda somewhat remind me of TCWE.
PUSH was good, but reading that book made my damn head hurt!!!! i had to try to figure out what the hell that girl what trin to say. GREAT BOOK THOUGH #noshade
daisy me and u will have to converse on some authors, cuz im running out of books. lol
ISC can’t read to read the summary!!!
Congratulations :yea:
I’ve never read FlyGirl, I’ll have to check that out. I loved Donald Goings books though. Also Nichelle who posts on here has a couple of good books. I think it’s called Doing His Time. I forgot what the other one was called.
COldest Winter was a great book, kinda like the hood version of Fly Girl, which I also LOVE!!! I still havent read Midnight yet. WHen I first read the book, I instantly thought of Tyrese sexy black azz, Rosario Dawson for Winter, Jeffry Wright for the dad, Taral Hicks for the mom. BUt all of those peole are a lot older now so………… jada is slippin
Also another GREAT BOOK that I think should be required reading for all middle school kids is Manchild In The Promise Land by Claude Brown. That was some real azz shyt. One of the best books I’ve read.
Daisy Says:
**************
Scenes from a Sistah WAS THE SHYT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My best and I used to say WE were going to make the movie version of that book. THe follow up was good too, although I dont remember the name of it.
Omar Tyree’s Just Say No is also a GREAT book. I’ve read most of his, and after Fly Girl – Just Say No is next, I also enjoyed Do Right Man. Leslie was GARBAGE the others of his I read were just ok. I was disappointed with the Fly Girl sequels too.,
@iscream
I GOTS CHOO on that as well …
AND on a later TBD date WE Need to VIBE on some things… YOUR writing skillz may come in very handy (Real Talk)
