A man who brutally beat his girlfriend on surveillance video at his workplace was released from jail on an appearance ticket Tuesday.
Jay Vazquez-Paulino was seen on video repeatedly punching and kicking his girlfriend at the Superior Package Company, where he works. At one point in the video, he is seen going outside to retrieve a knife.
He then reentered the building and threw the knife at the young woman, barely missing her head by inches.
As Vazquez-Paulino cruelly punched and kicked his girlfriend, his co-workers filed past, apparently uncaring or unwilling to help the woman.
Vazquez-Paulino’s criminal charges included criminal possession of a weapon, attempted assault, and harassment.
“The fact that he is captured on video goes further showing the strength of the case and the fact that he did have an intention to do harm here,” said Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler.
“The real issue here is that this gentleman was released with a ticket and given an order of protection and again is free to terrorize this woman, which in domestic cases there should be bail and … a cooling off period to allow parties to cool off.”
New Yorkers expressed outrage at Mayor Bill de Blasio and NY Governor Andrew Cuomo over their no cash bail reform that went into effect on January 1.
The cash bail reform bill prevents cash bail for “non-violent” criminals who normally can’t afford to post bond.
But residents say cash bail is necessary to keep a certain element of criminals off the streets. The sad truth is that detainees who can’t afford bond tend to be the most violent and commit more crimes.
A serial bank robber who robbed a 6th bank after he was released without cash bail on Jan. 8 turned himself in on Friday, Jan. 17.
“I can’t believe they let me out,” Gerod Woodberry said as police handed him two $25 gift cards and a free transit voucher when he was released on Jan. 8.
A pretrial hearing scheduled for Sunday was canceled when Woodberry’s family was unable to demonstrate how much money they could put up to spring him again, the NY Daily News reported.
Fed up prosecutor Jack Dennehy asked Sunday that Woodberry be held without bail, arguing he is “a danger to the community.” But Magistrate Judge Steven Gold said Woodberry will get bail, according to the News.
