A Black Lives Matter leader is calling for an investigation after founder Patrisse Cullors spent $3 million in public donations on homes.
Hawk Newsome wants an “independent” financial investigation into Cullors’ spending after she made substantial real estate transactions with no apparent income.
Cullors bought a three-bedroom home in Topanga Canyon for $1.4 million. The home is located in an area with a Black population of just 1.8 percent.
She purchased the property about 20 miles from her childhood home in an “impoverished” area in Van Nuys, California.
In her 2018 memoir, Patrisse Cullors said she was raised by a single mother and lived in a building where the paint was peeling.
Cullors often protested capitalism while secretly spending millions of dollars on properties.
The Topanga Canyon home purchase sparked outrage on social media. One Twitter user called Cullors a “fraud”.
Cullors bought two other homes in Los Angeles, according to public records.
In 2017, she bought a house in Inglewood for $510,000 which is now worth $800,000.
Cullors and her lesbian spouse Janaya Khan purchased a fourth home in Atlanta, Georgia for $415,000.
In total, Cullors owns $3.2 million in real estate holdings.
She was also looking at properties in a resort located in the Bahamas where golf legend Tiger Woods and pop star Justin Timberlake resided, according to the New York Post.
