A Florida woman was accidentally shot in the head by her 2-year-old son while she was on a Zoom work call.
Shamaya Lynn, 21, was on a Zoom call with co-workers Wednesday when they heard a loud bang. They watched as Lynn fell backward in her chair and saw the toddler standing behind her.
A co-worker called 911 to conduct a welfare check on Lynn at the Oaks of Spring Valley apartments off Wymore Road in Altamonte Springs.
First responders found Lynn, 21, dead from a gunshot wound to the back of the head, according to a police statement.
“Investigators determined that the injury was caused by a toddler who found a loaded handgun, which was left unsecured by an adult in the apartment,” the statement said.
“To anyone and everyone tuning into this story if you don’t have a firearm please keep it locked and secured this incident could be avoided,” Officer Roberto Ruiz Jr. said.
WESH reported that the unsecured weapon belonged to the child’s father. Another infant was in the home at the time. Neither child was injured. The children are now in the custody of relatives.
Detectives are working with the Seminole County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine if the gun’s owner will face charges.
