Guru’s nephew, Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff, makes an impassioned statement on behalf of his family. He claims that Guru’s producer/partner Solar has gained power of attorney for his uncle and is denying his family any access to him. He says that Guru actually fell ill in early February, and since then they have been shut out by Solar.
“..Solar has totally cut us off….the doctors and the staff at the hospital will not discuss any information with Guru’s family….in order for the family to change the situation, we have to hire a lawyer…unfortunately we don’t have a couple of weeks, my uncle Guru is in a serious….I know that Solar has been his right hand man, day in and day out, for the last 6 years, but does that not give him the right to make decidsion whether of not his own family gets to see Guru or learn about his status. The fact that he’s acting like this lets me know he does not have Guru’s best interest in mind. It is a control thing with Solar.
On Tues, I send Solar a text message [checking to see if I could get an update on Guru’s status]. Solar sent me a response that said: “Trish [Guru’s sister, ] started this!!! And guru would never have told her he was in the hospital, this is horrible what she did!! Now I need to care for Guru. Peace….”

There are a lot of rumors and wrong information circulating around about Guru’s current situation and health status. Hit producer and Guru’s longtime partner Solar wants to make clear that only he has access to Guru and his doctors.“Guru is resting and doing well. The doctors say that he will fully recover from his illness. We thank everyone who send prayers our way and we appreciate the outpouring of love from around the world!”
Guru, the sole founder* of the world famous Hip-Hop group GangStarr, who is currently recovering from his surgery, issued an official statement about his health status and addressed people who are spreading wrong information.
“I am doing fine and I am recovering! I’m weak though. Solar is the only person who has the accurate info on my situation. Any info from anybody else is false! I appreciate your well wishes and all the love!” says the legendary MC.
Guru has suffered a heart attack over the weekend in New York City and Hip-Hop fans around the world have shown massive love and support to one of the greatest rappers of all time.

One other thing, a few days ago I was asked by Solar’s team for a quote. I didn’t quite understand what they meant, but I was told that they were gathering wellwishes to add to their press release. While I have been very public with my hopes for Guru’s full recovery, I thought that was an odd request. So I declined and opted to wait for the prepared statement.

See, I knew GURU from back in the 84’when he attended college at Morehouse. Guru comes from a very prominent elite family in Boston, his father was the first black municpal court Judge in Boston and his mom was an educator as so with his brothers and sisters employed by universities.
Later on, Guru and DJ premier had a really bad beef’ and split and thats when Solar,blaq-riquan dude comes in the picture to manage and produce Guru,aka Keith. Solar has produced maybe 3 albums and promoted several soldout tours internationally lately. But, keep in mind Guru has been an alcoholic for years as it has been said by peeps in the industry. So, when DJ premier got word of Gurus illness, he started tweeting and just yesterday, Solar started his tweets to people that says:

That’s the only thing that makes sense, you know how you make a few bucks and everyone thinks you owe them and you have to cut them out of your life, but still his family should get to see him, sometimes it takes something like this to get a family back together. If he were my child nothing is going to stop me from him. His manager should have some kind of compassion. Sometimes what we tell other ppl about folks we know can get exaggerated because we want ppl to pick sides.
That’s what I don’t understand. This man is fighting for his life and even IF he had a falling out with his family, I’m sure the family and probably Guru himself will let of all that go for the moment so they could see each other. Even if I told my hubby that while I was willing and able (GOD forbid) if something like this happened to me I’m sure he wouldn’t be like…well she said she didn’t want to see yall. I am glad that I could not view this at work. This is so sad and emotional. I can’t imagine his pain but I sure can feel it. Yes, Solo seems like the new wife who wants to make all the decisions and keep everyone at bay. I do hope that Justin’s open video finds it’s way to someone who can help this family get updates and get to see their loved one. None of us are promised tomorrow and Guru is already in the hospital fighting for his life. Not fair to keep his family from him even if Solo thinks it is, there is nothing so rotten that someone can do to keep family away in time of crisis. Justin seems like a very articulate young man who just wants answers and to see his uncle. Shame on you Solo for being selfish. GOD don’t like ugly. I think only a wife and a mother has rights to their husband/son. Solo is way off base with his decision. Sandra I think most of us are mature enough to know that some rappers/ppl are gay,(whether they stay in the closet or not). I don’t care which sex someone prefers. I think if what Justin is saying is true,(which I believe), most ppl don’t care what ppl do in the bedroom. You would be surprised. It depends on the type of power of attorney. I’ve worked in hospitals where the patient’s gay lover called all the shots and kept family members from visiting because the family shunned the patient and his lifestyle while he was healthy..
Guru is no good to anyone if he’s dead. I’m willing to bet, like most black men and entertainers, he prolly has no health or life insurance nor does he have a will. Prolly the only thing that is legally binding is that POA, and those music contracts. Who cares if his father is an attorney – smart ain’t hereditary. If he wanted to do the safe and smart thing ,he’d done it, but he took a big gamble and went into hip hop when it was very new, and WAS successful.
Now he half dead fighting for his life. His family should be allowed to at least know what’s going on, even if they can’t make decisions on his health.
This is all very sad, but minus being a rapper, HOW MANY BLACK FOLK YOU KNOW HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS MESS. I know my family has.

I’m with you on this. P of A only means you can make medical, financial decisions, be able to go to the DMV and renew someones sticker or renew a drivers license. I never knew it meant that your family can’t see you. Why is the hospital giving Solo so much power or is he really trying to cover up something to protect Guru.
FYI, I don’t even know who Solo or Guru are, but this is sad and messy.

You guys, the man is in the hospital. Have you ever been in a hospital when someone is in critical condition? The nurses are constantly monitoring, pushing IV meds, taking vitals, rotating, etc…How much visiting do you think is going to take place, while someone is likely in and out of a drug high? MOFO’S DONT NEED TO BE HANGING OUT IN ICU POA OR NOT.
I’m sure Sandra will agree with me, being a nurse. Handle all that legal mess in the courtroom, let the medical staff do their jobs.

We have all had loved ones in ICU, you get to go in two at a time. POA or not, why are they being denied is the question? If he is in a coma a legal mess takes time. Remeber the “Shivo”(sp) case. I know a coma and veg. state is two diff things. Why deny the loved ones what could be the last chance to say “good bye”, hearing a loved ones voice have brought many out of a coma. I thing Solo needs to let this happen for his family to talk to him, hold his hand. Someone may be in or out of a drug high, but does that mean we are not worthy to visit our loved one? Just Asking.

We have a HUGE fam she had 9 kids. The nurses knew we were NOT leaving and dealt with it. I feel fam should do what works for them and that worked for us. If the drs said we couldnt see her for medical reasons thats different otherwise we keep it moving.

Maybe it depends on hospitals and what State you live in. I have seen tubes all over my BFFs dad before he passed but I got to see him. I have seen tubes all over my dad and was never denied. Women in labor have Drs. and Nurses picking, probing and checking on a paitent, that is their job, but I have never known any to kick a vistor out when one is already in a coma/comfortable enviroment. I will add that I do understand that some ppl can’t handle a hospital just like a funeral and should be removed. To remove a whole list of ppl who have not been given the opportunity to visit is not right. Just my .02. I did not get the opportunity to say “good bye” to my mom. The last time I saw her(dead or alive) I was 10. It was date night for mom and dad. The last words I had with my my mom before she walked out the door with my dad “I was standing on their bed and asked mom if she could buy me some “lip gloss” she said yes, I said I love you, we hugged, we kissed and I jumped on their bed because I was going to get lip gloss the next day. They walked out the door toghether and my dad came home with out his wife/ our mom to tell 5 kids their mother died. It is what it is , had my mom been hooked up to tubes as I am sure she was, nothing would have stopped me as her child not want to say a “Last Good Bye”.
Wow I got a forward email from a friend who knows Guru’s sister. When I first heard the news I was surprise to hear the condition of his illness.
I hope he makes it through. I wish during this time his family and Solar could work this issue out.

if a single person assigns power of attorney to ANYONE [thereby cutting his family out of decisions], believe there is a problem w/the family. many people refuse to believe there can be family dysfunction but it exists. sometimes those are the LAST folks you want to see in your last days. i have friends who just don’t deal w/their folks.
now, cousins and stuff are unfortunate because any beef probably doesn’t go that far but some shady relatives will flock over you when you’re on your deathbed just to see if they can get their cut of your assets.

lol, this trips me out when i see it. when my dad was laid up, i was kinda dropping in and out and my aunts were mad at me because i was next of kin and i didn’t hang out all day. i don’t believe in sitting all day and night and i knew he was in recovery mode.
on another note, the hospital cut his girlfriend off because she put down “wife” when she really wasn’t. when they found this out, they scratched her damn name off of everything. she could visit and stuff but they never spoke to her about his condition again. she made sure to make my dad marry her after that!
If indeed he gave POA to his friend of 6yrs? Then it must of been beef with Guru and his family. Sometimes family would comeout of the wood work when they know your sick and not doing well to fight over your belongings and plot for what you have left sometimes your do not have the best intrest in you or for you. My Bitch ass uncle right now is playing that game cause he is the military uncle who dictates to others and about thier life. He can never keep me away from my granmother. I tried to beat his ass at the hospital cause he think he can put his hands on my like i am 13 or something. When folks make all that noise at funerals with the crying and nonsense falling and passing out and Shit it’s thier guilt getting to them.

This is sad but there’s gotta be more to the story. Even if I gave my best friend POA there’s no way in hell she would deny my family something as simple but important as a visit nor would I do the same to her. And for his nephew to have Solars # to text him means at some point there was communication between him and the family. You don’t cut an entire family off for beef with one person.

This kid Justin in the video is the son of Guru’s sister “Patricia”, the one Guru has issues with.
Solar just released a statement to HipHop Wired.com and it goes a little something like this:
“I have nothing but the deepest Love and respect for The Elam family. But I have not stopped anybody from seeing him! Guru’s brother, Sister and niece has visited with him and his brother was here for 3 days. I am in touch with them on a daily basis. Guru’s family dynamic and who he wants to look out for his interests is Guru’s Business and best left too Guru too discuss.
I will state that Guru wanted this matter to be kept private to protect his loved ones and fans from this ordeal. and from it becoming a circus, Which it is becoming. Guru has made clear he does not want anything to do with certain people from his past, and for them too be making false statements about his health is unacceptable.
