The sidewalk outside the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City looks like a disaster zone. Hundreds of desperate refugees sleep on cardboards on a sidewalk outside while Hispanic migrants sleep comfortably inside.
The scene is repeated across New York, where light-skinned migrants are given preference over Haitian and Muslim refugees.
Many newly arrived migrants have been waiting outside the Roosevelt Hotel for a room. But the vacancies are quickly filled by newly arriving immigrants who don’t look like them.
“I want a better life,” one migrant told DailyMail.com from outside the migrant intake center on Tuesday morning. The migrants were told there was no more room in the hotel.
When a room does open up, a city official (left) handpicks Hispanic women and children — some of whom are accompanied by men. The city official escorts the family past Haitian and Muslim immigrants who have been waiting for days.
Other so-called “migrant hotels” have also reached capacity as thousands of migrants flow into the city from the southern border.
New York City is currently housing more than 56,000 migrants at 200 sites – while thousands more are in the city’s shelter system, according to The Mail.
Mayor Eric Adams said there is no more room in the city. But buses keep arriving daily from the border.
The Roosevelt Hotel, which was shuttered three years ago, was re-opened to accommodate immigrants.
