President-elect Donald Trump‘s new cabinet appointments sent shockwaves through Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.

In a press release issued on Nov. 12, Trump named Fox News anchor Pete Hegseth as the Secretary of Defense to lead the nation’s military forces.

Trump wrote a glowing testimonial to Hegseth in his press release. The president-elect said Hegseth “has spent his life as a Warrior for the Troops, and for the Country. Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First. With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice – Our military will be Great Again, and American will Never Back Down.”

Trump also noted that Hegseth is an Army Combat Veteran who did tours in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He was decorated with two Bronze stars, as well as a Combat Infantryman’s Badge.

The traditional father-of-7 has been a host at Fox News for 8 years. He has used his platform to disparage women in the military, saying women are not combat-ready.

Hegseth’s appointment as Secretary of Defense (to replace Democrat Lloyd Austin) shocked D.C. and infuriated lawmakers and the news media.

In a tweet on Tuesday night, Senator Elizabeth Warren called for Congress to reject Hegseth as Secretary of Defense.

She tweeted:

“A Fox & Friends weekend co-host is not qualified to be the Secretary of Defense. I lead the Senate military personnel panel. All three of my brothers served in uniform. I respect every one of our service members. Donald Trump’s pick will make us less safe and must be rejected.”

Some X (formerly Twitter) users are upset that Hegseth will target transgender service members and women in the military.

So far, Trump has filled 8 out of 26 Cabinet positions. His Cabinet picks include Tesla Founder Elon Musk and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy to head the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
