Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was rushed to a hospital after falling and fracturing her hip in Luxembourg, Germany. The injury occurred hours after Pelosi posed for a photo in which she appears to lean heavily on a congressman and hold his hand for support.

The 84-year-old California Representative fell and fractured her hip during an official trip to Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.

Her spokesman, Ian Krager, said in a statement that she is “currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals” and is unable to attend the remainder of events on her trip.

Hip fractures are serious injuries that can lead to life-threatening complications like blood clots in the lungs and infection.

Hip fractures are common among the elderly due to weak bones from medical conditions like osteoporosis and menopause.

Recovery time for hip injuries can take months, and require a walker or cane. The recovery time increases with age.
