Sales of George Orwell’s classic novel ‘1984’ skyrocketed 69% on Amazon, according to a report on WashingtonExaminer.com.
Renewed interest in “1984” — originally published 64 years ago — was sparked by reports of widespread spying on American citizens — domestically and abroad — by the National Security Agency (NSA), under the auspices of the Obama Administration.
In 1949 Orwell predicted security cameras when no such technology existed. In his book “1984” Orwell predicted a dystopian future where citizens are subservient to a totalitarian government. Orwell foresaw a future where citizens are spied on by mass media (cell phones, laptop cameras, etc.), and where citizens are brainwashed by a charismatic Wizard of Oz-like character named Big Brother.
According to a report in Britain’s Guardian newspaper, the National Security Agency ordered U.S. Telecommunications provider Verizon “to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the U.S. and between the U.S. and other countries.”
The Justice Department has begun the process of filing charges against Edward Snowden, the former CIA spy who leaked documents to The Guardian newspaper. Snowden is currently ensconced in an unknown location in Hong Kong, where he fled in fear for his safety.
The Obama administration has a history of prosecuting whistleblowers at an alarming rate.

Ok so let me get this straight…the President will be blamed if someone comes over here and plans some horrific terrorist attack which we have seen performed from our very own citizens and people also get mad that they are listening to phone calls and what not. Sounds like a lose lose situation….people need to realize, you have to give up something to feel safe. I mean what are we supposed to do?
I think anyone with half a brain already knew the government had access to their information. I mean the police monitors people’s credit card states, phone activity etc without informing the person under surveillance. Is it really far fetched that the government too, has been doing the same? I don’t understand the over reactions. I think people just really want something to complain about. Specially they need something to attack Obama on. The program has been in effect since the Patriot Act passed in 2001. Probably been going on longer than that. When something gets blown up or shot up people be screaming “Why wasn’t more done! Why didn’t they catch this person before!” Now they screaming “invasion of privacy”. I for one am unfazed by this. Between all the crap that’s posted on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc did one really think the internet is a privacy haven? I can google and find a random stranger’s SSN, tax records, Phone Number, Address, etc just by having their screen name. It is what it is.

It is legal. They submitted a warrant for information and have to continue to obtain a warrant every couple months to obtain info. Legality isn’t the issue, it’s that it was done without the knowledge of the general public. So it seems to me they at least have a leg up on some other countries who will take info, without even bothering to ask the courts permission. Their actions seem to imply at least a conscious effort to limit the scope of their power as all branches were informed: Executive, Judicial and Legislative. The scope of the warrant seems to only cover superficial information like times/dates. But, I’m just as ignorant to the government’s full activities as any other non-Top Secret security clearance individual and I may be wrong. From observation it seems to be the under-informed and the uber-paranoid who seems to be most bothered by the recent revelations. But then again, I guess only time will tell who’s on the losing side. I would advise anyone who is deeply upset take their fears to their local representative and make your concerns known.

Goes back to my point. Governments have done it forever and it was recently leagalized through the Patriot Act (in the name of terror). Its still unconstiutional and people like yourself have accepted it because it has a war on terror bow attached (manufactured crisis). We have to look at the bigger picture!
The branches were established to allocate power not to take away from the citizens. A goverment should only be as strong as its people. So the fact that its being conducted without the “knowledge of the general public” indicates that their efforts are not conscious. Its for personal gain

Then Senator Obama gained a lot of moral and leadership credibility by criticizing Bush for a program that was more limited in scope under FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act). Under FISA, warrantless wiretaps of people communicating with terrorists was done, and ruled constitutional. The communication with the foreign terrorist was the probable cause
Obama has now taken that same law (Patriot Act) he criticized as over-intrusive, and expanded it ten-fold. And folks in our community are shrugging at this blatant hypocrisy.
Its okay to be partisan with your politics, but never with your personal freedoms. You giving this man a license to hunt on your property, could result in the next man arming himself and taking over your property.
