I saw this list on another site. Personally, I don’t have any problems understanding T.I. when he speaks. I love his accent. Besides that, he’s very articulate when he wants to be. 
Anyway, in honor of T.I.’s sixth studio album Paper Trail, which drops tomorrow, someone decided to translate a list of words from T.I.’s songs.
According to pre-sales estimates: first week sales of Paper Trail will come close to — or beat Lil’ Wayne’s sales this year:

i had said it before but that deep deep southern twang ain’t no joke! we always got teased for sounding “white” by my fam who is in alabama. but my momma has been removed from alabama for 40 years and she sounds like she left yesterday. i have to ask my husband to repeat stuff sometimes…after 7 years together. but hey, he sounds sexy to me so what can i say?

I love T.I accent I think that he is way more articulate then some of these rappers. But on another note, I have a friend thats from louisana and sometimes I get lost from having a conversation with her especially when she says “Baaaaaby” in ever sentence!

Talk about TI all you want, he will never be as bad as Plies and call himself a goon, even more looking like one. TI may talk his slang, but if you have heard him in an interview, he knows when to turn if off and on. He is very intelligent and knows how to get that paper. Hint the title of his new cd Paper Trail. I commend him, you have to know how to flip it sometime, no what Im talkin bout. lol
And will copies of this be provided with the purchase of “Paper Trail”….in stores Sept 30.

Umm do alot of you guys talk like an Harvard English Scholar all day? Chances are you probably don’t…like everyone T.I. uses his relaxed speech (aka hood lingo) when he is in an environment to do so.
However, when necessary he can be very intellectual and articulate.

i agree! i told my son to NEVER dumb himself down to anybody to fit in by talking like he got a mouth full of shyt! Trust, speaking like the intelligent dude he is has not made him want for friends…he has them from ALL walks of life, and he doesn’t have to talk a certain way around certain groups for the privilege…i fail to see what’s cute about talkin’ like you have a 1st grade education…open your damm mouth like you got some sense!

I think even when T.I. is using slang he doesn’t “dumb it down”…he definitely gets his point across and he uses more aphorisms (in conversation and rhymes) than any other artist in the game.
He is quick, witty and charismatic…not many people have those attributes.

I wish this little list was out 12 years ago when I moved to Atlanta…man it wouldve helped me alot! I always say someone needs to do a translation guide just like they do for French and Spanish and all the other languages. I believe people in the south definitely have their own languages and even their own dialects. I have learned to translate the ATL dialect but, I can see how someone would need help! My father is from southern Georgia and they sound even worse. Being from Detroit, as I would go down to visit growing up they would always tease me about talking too proper.
They used to always call our grandmother “MUH” (short for ma I guess), while I always called her grandma. They used to tease me so much that I had to start calling her that too just to fit in! I hated it.LOL!

When I first came down here from the NY I was teased so bad. They would say I thought I was better than them. Which was strange to me. The longer I stayed down here the more I started to change my accent to the southern style but it is still understandable. The two southern words I will not ever ever say is fixin to and over yonda. NEVER!!!
I know i turn my off and on, when i’m chilling with my friends, we are not watching out for grammer we just being ourselves and stuff, so that is not uncommon. plus people come from diff walks of life, I come from the hood, and rose up, so I still know how to talk a little crap with the girls, or come to work or conversate with my co-workers using proper english. My children are diff. they don’t come from where I did,they go to a predominantly white school and they talk correct, but am i going to knock somebody else NO, because they probably didn’t come from where all yall correct speaking all the time come from. excuse any typos i refuse to go back and read.

You seem to be confusing the word ‘accent’ with the word ‘dialect’. I said “I love his accent” which is made up of different Southern dialects. I didn’t say I love the content of his speech. But it’s funny that you think all people who speak with the same Southern drawl as T.I. and Tiny means they’re from the ghetto and trying to keep it real.

I am one of the few real “Georgia Peaches” and yes I would imagine that I have a bit of southern twang in my accent also, but why is it when “ghetto” when blacks have a southern accent, but country when whites have the same tone? Im just asking…I am a very intelligent individual graduated Suma Cum Laude, if that makes you intelligent, but in general conversation you would assume that I am as “ghetto” as they come. Another infraction resulting from making assumptions.

I think there’s a difference between “ghetto” & “country” talk. One has to do with being uneducated and the other with the region you live in.
I went to Tennessee when I was in high school and I was in a store for 20 minutes trying to understand what this man was saying when he was asking me to pass him the “battress” …he was saying “batteries”, but I couldn’t understand it from his Tennessee accent!
Now if he would have said, “Shawty, snatch me dem batteries o’r der.” Then that’s just ghetto!

I’m kind of offended by this translator. Yes! T.I does have some fukked up grammar BUT for those of you that THINK you speak correct English what makes you think that you pronounce words as they were meant to be spoken? People from England beleive that the majority of Americans speak bad/broken English. I watched this documentary on PBS about the different accents and slang’s of the U.S. and NO TWO regions speak alike. That’s what makes us (Americans) who we are we are a mixture of languages people and cultures. Given most people from Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana speak some sort of broken English but don’t just pin point the southern states – Hell I can barely understand what people from New York, Jersey (especially), Maryland say half of the damn time.
As for the comment about knowing when to turn “it” on and off – what’s so wrong with that? I don’t not act, talk, think or be the person at home and around my peers as I am when I’m around my boss and co- workers. FuKK them they don’t need to know anything but what I want them to know about me. Same goes with my parents; granny; elders etc – I don’t conduct myself/talk with them as I would with my home girls or Sandra Rose – wake up people and lets embrace who we are not what “them others” think we should be

People are attributing his speech to a southern accent. President Bush has a southern accent, as well as legions of other educated people from the south. T.I. speaks ghetto, southern slang. There is a huge differance. Now some of you can accept that as cool. Hell I remember back in the day when Cali tried to inject “Ebonics” into the school system. The public was outraged and stopped the ridiculous proposal in it’s tracks as well they should have.
Now I know I am extra hard on T.I. and try as I might I can’t seem to shake my disappointment in this man, but facts are still facts. New Yorkers have a deep accent, but Ed Koch and Fat Joe don’t sound alike. One is inarticulate and one is not.

It did not reflect made up words, or slang so the issue here is his delivery of said words…………….Once again Kerry Underwood pronounces words differently, or Alanis Morrisette (however you spell her name) and its overlooked.

Please don’t say “conversate” at work. It is not a word. Go to dictionary dot com where they spell it out for you. It is a slang term. Look up “ain’t”. It’s in Webster’s as well and they actually state that it is a term used by the uneducated. It too is not a word.
Anyway, look at how big an impression speech makes on people which my mother so wisely tought me. You are saying that us proper speaking folk are looking down on people who come from low income areas. I was born and raised in the projects of New Jersey by a single mother on welfare and food stamps. I AM A HIGH SCHOOL DROP OUT. I put that out there just for you sis. I am proof that there is a God and that you can rise above your circumstances. I am nowhere near rich and am the single mother of two girls who have two differant fathers. I was a criminal at one point in my life. I am ghetto as they come, but Corporate America will NEVER know that and my little brothas and the sistas in the hood can look at me as an example. I will never keep it so real that they hear me speaking like I am fron the hood because that is nothing to aspire too.
Know that I said all of that with love and that I NEVER tell people about the fact that I dropped out of high school, but I felt you needed to know and hopefully you will understand why I think T.I. is a poor example for our kids regardless of how many blog parties he throws for them or backpacks he buys for them. Our kids need examples so that they don’t go down the same knucklehead path me and T.I. did.

@bird that’s all good,but what ti did was in the past just like what you did, so now that we know this should we say your a disgrace, ti made a mistake, no matter how you want to look at it. everybody makes mistakes, and since you know all this to me i really don’t get you, cuz i did the same drop out not intentionally, i passed the exit first try, was accepted into the alabama school of fine arts for my writing abilities and didn’t take advantage. so everybody makes mistakes and if we could go back i’m sure we would, that’s why what ever ti did he is trying to turn it around. i listen to his album and it is so evident. personally about the conversate thing, that’s just like a credit report to me it might not be in one and in the other,but it still counts. so why is ti a bad example . to some children in the ghetto he might be an inspiration to come out of the hood, even if by music, but just because he made that mistake he’s a disgrace, no he’s not to me. but we have our own opinions. so if you and ti went down the same path what exactly makes you not a disgrace cuz know one knows? i’m just trying to understand you. you act like ti choose where he was born and the enviroment he was from. but for real i’m done we probably won’t agree and that’s life. i respect your look at things also.

Your path in life determines who you are today, so even if you you started out wrong and ended up ok, such as myself it has to all be taken in because that is you as a whole. @ Bird, I wish that it was that simple for us to march up there. What may happen, though, is that some people are going to mis-use their funds – like when people received relief money from Katrina. Some used it to get right, but others for strippers and beer? I guess that will be their problem. If they don’t want to pay the funds directly, hell, just pay off my mortgage and student loans and credit cards and I’ll be fine!

I’ve been told all my life that I act white b/c of the way I speak. There are people that have not had enough exposure to the world to distinguish between “proper english” and “acting white”. I do not have an accent but I frequently told that I do. I actually speak a regional dialect (ohio) that many say sounds “white”. Its on the same level and “using slang” and “sounding ghetto”. People need to quit associating all that is black with ghetto and all that is proper with white. It’s the one discriminatory stigma that has been placed on me by other black folk.
But, when I laugh loud and clown with my friends in public, I’m ghetto!

I KNOW how to code-switch, but I rarely do – having worked with pretty much the same people for 13 yrs. I’m much more likely to sound “white” when someone pisses me off. Then I get REALLY proper.
Truth is, though – all Black folk don’t sound the same, just like all White folk don’t either.
Ms Kimba…YOU FEEL ME? What is “sounding” white? It beccomes a very interesting conversation when someone says that to me. I’ve learned to ease into that conversation knowing that the other person is just a ‘lil ignant and I need to educate my people. It garners a good amount of attention.

I’m originally from the south and I have a southern drawl. When I talk a lot of people always ask me, “Where you from?”
That hurts my feelings, but they don’t know that.
I wish that people would get past simple distractions such as sound and just realize that we are suppose to be different. I think that it makes southerners a bit insecure when speaking to people who are a bit proper because we usually accept them, and they don’t accept us.
