Shakir Stewart on the Premiere of ‘Brutha’

A couple of loyal readers hit me up about this show yesterday. “Brothers to Brutha” premiered on BET Tuesday night. The show follows the career of five biological brothers who formed a singing group mentored by Jermaine Dupri.
Shakir Stewart, who signed the brothers to Def Jam, filmed his scenes in the show while he was still lucid. It’s interesting to note that Brutha attended Stewart’s private Memorial in Atlanta last week while his longtime boss and mentor, L.A. Reid, did not attend.
Apparently, top tier celebrities had to pitch in to help pay Stewart’s funeral expenses because Reid refused to even take calls from the family. There’s a special place in hell reserved for people like Reid who put money and self over a lifetime of dedication and loyalty.
I promised I was going to reveal more details about Shakir Stewart’s untimely death and the turn of events that led up to it. But in order to do that I would have to reveal a certain aspect of his life that is of a sensitive nature and can’t be written without casting Stewart in a negative light.
Out of respect for the family, I will leave that alone.
I’ve heard crazy allegations that Stewart was running from a certain rapper and armed gang bangers. But it’s a rare man who takes his own life because another man is gunning for him.
Men usually take their lives over money, lost pride or lost love — not because they fear another man. According to Stewart’s close friends, he was a man’s man with a strong sense of pride. And he remained that way until the day he died.

Yeah I saw this, it was soo surreal to seeing this.I was shocked.

Did this dude have a wilk or anything set up for his fiance/girlfriend? I mean even if he had life insurance more than likely it was void because he committed suicide. Talk about a downward spiral/taking the easy way out.
BTW, @ #3 it was somewhat of a joke. I read between Sandra’s lines and that’s how I came to my conclusion.
And don’t take what I say offensively.I said that because just because someone has money they have to do every and anything.I know he wants to, but sometimes you can’t.As my grandfather would say and he had said before he died “Don’t ever put too much money on the ground.” And money shouldn’t even matter at this point.

i hate to be insensitive..but, i too believe that he was living his life on the dl and somebody was getting ready to out him….very sad. that he would not just come out rather than to take his own life.
I agree with you guys that sometnig isn’t write but I will respect Sandra’s decision. I did not watch the show the intro song bugged the hell out of me.
Male homosexuality is really looked down upon in the black/minority community. So, I am knocked shocked that someone would choose death over being out in public. Not to mention when they are living a double life and pretty well off financially (supposed to be). It’s sad but true and unfortunately it has always been that way. Homosexuality has always been associated with whites and within the past decade most black males have started actually coming out of the closet in public but we still have a long way to go until it’s somewhat acceptable.
His family says he’s a man, yet he took his own life? And then put his family through the misery of having to beg others to pay to bury him? And you say LA Reid has a special place in hell reserved?

sandra, you’re being awfully nice…why do you care? did you know him personally? his lifestyle and death has affected many people around him…if the info casts him in a negative light, he shouldn’t have been doing it…i don’t mean to sound insensitive, but he’s gone…the info you have may appear as hearsay/gossip, but it may help others as well…

there was a case in smithfield nc last year where two supposed “man’s men” sat on a railroad track and offed themselves together. i heard all of the rumors including they had been busted having sex in the back of a car a few weeks prior. and police arrests are public records…

it’s no way that i would take my own life….i don’t care how hard times get, or what someone was about to expose about myself. i couldn’t do it. i couldn’t sit there and take 100 pills to die…and it’s no way that i could pull a trigger on my own body….i just couldn’t do it. it has to be something mentally wrong with folks that can bring themselves to take their own life.

Looking at the stories cropping up on this guy I am drawn to conclude that L.A. was distancing his-self just incase the story leaked about any DL lifestyle. If speculations are true L.A. wont need to hit Jenny Craig for weight loss sponserships (IJS).

Who the hell left you in charge? How do you know why a man will take their own life? Have you ever asked them before or AFTER they did it? I mean who are you to sit there and give reasons when sometimes in most cases there is or isn’t a note. There was a story once, where a young man got pulled over by the police (at gunpoint) and guess what? He blew his brains out. Now tell me why did this young man take his on life………..

I watched Bruthas (the show) and honestly 90% of the men (they all were black) were GAY or BiSexual. I thought to myself LAWD, which one of Brutha’s (in the group) will be TURNED OUT FIRST??? Who told their parents to let the come to the ATL? So young, so naive!!!! I do not know what else to say.

Sandra–I was waiting on you to post this. When I saw the premiere Tuesday night, when we were first introduced to Shakir, he spoke on Janet, saying, “She’s back…Janet’s back”, “Oh, we just finished filming her video”, and wondering if the ending result of her relationship with Def Jam and his overseeing her project there, if that had anything to do with his death. He seemed like he was really behind her.
Hmmm as much as I want details, it would be wrong of me to ask you for them…so I will just say R.I.P….I have to catch the show my friend was talking about it this morning.

I’m just wondering why everyone jumped to the conclusion that Shakir was living on the DL. There are many things he could have been doing that might not reflect well on him.
And, I agree with Sandra…L.A. Reid was wrong for not taking calls from the family and not paying his respects. I am under the impression that Shakir worked tirelessly for this man and had much respect for him, as his boss and mentor. For him not to show his respects and/or contribute (if that’s what was needed) at a time like this is jacked up! Maybe he’s got something to do with the tragic events and how they played out. I’m still praying for Shakir and his family. This is a tragedy no matter what he was in to…

Yes he is hilarious. You will be hard pressed to find any information about him personally… But I have had Hours of entertainment thanks to him. The things he comes up with are just insane! Once I was watching operation Repo on Court TV and thought the lady one there would be perfect for his “Hot Slut of the day”… Nedless to say I emailed him and within minutes he responded letting me know that she had not only been hot slut of the day but also the week…LOL His fast response just amazed me because he gets like a million hits a day…

Shakir was a high level executive. Why would his family need help burying him? Doesn’t he have some money in the bank? Doesn’t Def Jam owe him a paycheck? I’m sure just one of his checks is enough to pay for a really nice funeral.
I watched the show and I agre with the poster who said something was crazy about the uncle and Shakir. I wondered if he was on the DL and I read about the hummer and I even saw a pic with all that cash in it.

A friend describes the executive’s troubled behavior, day of tragedy.

Herb Smith told police that soon as he stepped out the door he called 911. Seconds later, he heard a gunshot.
A day after Def Jam’s Shakir Stewart committed suicide, the family of the executive released a statement:
“Over the past several weeks, Shakir’s behavior was inconsistent with the man we all know and love. As much as we all tried to help him, Shakir was in deep pain and largely suffering in silence.”
Now newer details are emerging regarding the “inconsistent behavior.” According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Stewart’s friend Herb Smith, who was present at Stewart’s home the day of the tragedy, told police that Stewart was “wigging out” before his death.
On October 31, Stewart’s finance Michelle Rivers, first noticed things were strange with Stewart when they went out for Halloween. At a loss, Rivers called Smith to talk to him.
Smith says that he went over to Stewart’s Marietta home, to find his friend visibly shaken. Stewart never confided in Smith, nor Rivers, what was wrong and he eventually told Smith to leave the house and go “back home to his wife and children.”
Smith told police that soon as he stepped out the door he called 911. Seconds later, he heard a gunshot.
Rivers, who was in the couple’s kitchen at the time, found Stewart on the master bedroom floor with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head— not the bathroom, as previously reported.
A private funeral for the executive was held Thursday.
On Friday, a public memorial at Stewart’s alma mater Morehouse, was held at the King’s Chapel in Atlanta, where Def Jam artist Ne-Yo sung “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday.”
Guests included many of Stewart’s Def Jam family: LL Cool J, Chrisette Michele, Steve Bartels and Karen Kwak. Other mourners included DJ Don Cannon, Big Oomp, Atlanta City Councilman Ceasar Mitchell, and DJ Toomp.
A biographical video tribute (to the tunes of Michael Jackson, Prince, Maxwell, Ginuwine, Rick Ross and Young Jeezy) was played.
Autopsy reports will be available in 12 weeks.
