One of my favorite rap groups back in the day was Brand Nubian. Grand Puba, Sadat X and that foine Lord Jamar had it all going for them: swagger, sex appeal and a lyrical flow that was undeniable.

Now a lot of people think this is easy as it looks
Books and books of rhyme concepts and hooks
Session to session to get thoughts manifested
Stressin and stressin to hit the world with a blessin’
Lot of people often ask, “Puba how you givin’ back?”
The way I give back is through the knowledge of my raps

Back then they called it conscious rap or message rap delivered by intelligent black brothas who had the skills to convert their every day existence into words and add a funky beat to make you nod your head while you think.

The thought-provoking lyrics of “Don’t Let It Go To Your Head” was a precursor to the sad state of mindless rap music today:

Don’t let your gray matter pop
Cause when you release the album
If they don’t cop, you gonna get dropped, so..

Don’t let it go your head, no!”
Cause one single don’t make you a hit
Stay true to who you are,
    Don’t never forget
Keep your feet on solid ground,
Cause what goes up, must come down, uhh
